The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

I acknowledge that certain players have attributes at a young age - but to be honest they have to show it a senior level. The intensity is that much greater at the senior level and then should rise again going to the NT level.

I've heard so many people going on about the next big thing whether it was Martin Lo, Kaz Patafta, Sebastian Pasquali, Liam Rose, Anthony Kalik, Anthony Caceres, Daniel Arzani or Garang Kuol - but let them prove it at senior level.

Look at Irankunda and Kuol (who I think will make it) and they both struggled with playing more than 30 minutes in a senior game at first because of the intensity.

Triantis was the form DM/CM we had. Loaned to Hibs who were struggling he became one of the best DM/CM players in the SPFL after being in my mind the best CB the year before in the ALM.

I remember Adrian Caceres showing highlight reels of his nephew Anthony years ago. Yet he was just capped. Why - because being a great junior does not prepare you to be a great senior player. Caceres at 32 had not figured out that you don't have to beat the same player three times before losing the ball before he was about 27. Brattan at 35 was just capped. Were all the previous NT managers wrong during their careers?

O'Neill, who I rate seems to be going through a bit of a form slump and Yazbek was not performing as well as Triantis. To my mid he should not only have been in the match day squads - he should have been starting.
Lot of fair comments made, PJ.

True. Many tyros don’t develop. Others develop much later.

For the Socceroos I don’t think O’Neill is going through any sort of form slump. This view is also backed up by stats I’ve recorded.

Popa’s squad selected against the Kiwis should please the legion of Popa naysayers on G and G, who have claimed he is inflexible and plays favourites.

Shit font, shit slogan.

'Forever Golden'

Which marketing boffin came up with that? Anyone care to explain?

The MS paint additions vastly improve the visual.

Each campaign had a slogan and the forever golden is a weak one. The 2022 one was 'Give it 100' and the Asian Cup was 'Another Breed'.

Sure but in plain English what's 'Forever Golden' supposed to mean?

They probably should just get rid of slogans. They're lame.
Probably cost them money to pay marketers

Let paramount come up with a slogan for free. Their a league ad last year was good imo

We've not always played in gold either.

It's ever present now to form hashtags. Most FAs do it. 2010 Germany had 'Our 4th star for Germany'.

The colouring and font is woeful.

I guess we can have 1 star for an asian cup win? Or do we count the oceania wins?

There's a part of the economy with high fees that churn out such basic garbage. It's just mental but one side has an approved budget and the other is good enough at spinning what's going to be delivered.

Not here but it's crazy how the financial sector has developed and it's got its own internal Web of regulatory requirements which basically passes money around from firm to firm. I have ESL students who provide 'services' to insurance companies and they whispered they don't know why they're exactly needed but won't say it too loudly.

Here, even a fan competition would be better. Free, engaging and genuine.

In 2018 the social media page posted our WC line up showing everyone had played in the A League. Someone posted the most liked comment 'well, there's your ad campaign for next season'.

Yeah id be amazed if free fan stuff wasnt better

This is even more important from an optics perspective when you consider that he is the son of a current Socceroos assistant coach.
Optics perspective?

So if a player identified as having a superior skill set by national team coaches shouldn't be selected because his father is a current national team assistant coach?

For sake of argument, Popa and Hayden Foxe, could conceivably rate Okon Jr highly, whatever Okon Sr's appraisal of his son?

I'm playing a bit of Devil's Advocate, Keeper. I agree players need to establish themselves in senior comps too. For mine, at Okon Jr's point in time in his development, he has an impressive skill set, often not observable in previous gens. Notwithstanding, quite a few other young Aussies do too.

At Okon's current age, he is decidedly more skilful than Triantis was when he was a few years older.
They are only 2 years apart though, what ages do you mean? (Triantis is born 2003, okon 2005)

I thought Okon was 20 and Triantis was 24?

I'll rephrase that. At Okon Jr's current age, he was better than Triantis was at that age.

Thanks for the birthdates!
they are both quite young,

even if okon ends up better it is nice to have depth in that midfield anchor role. I can't think of a tall technical defensive midfielder apart from those two so not a lot of room for things to go wrong.

What's the point of even bringing up Triantis? He has chosen to represent Greece if given the chance.

I was hoping to read a few more positive posts from some of Popa's naysayers for selecting newer players Segecic, Kalik, Botic, Milanovic, Balard, plus Irankunda and Matthews who've only played limited minutes.

Circati is still young, but is possibly already the best player in the team. Silvera and Toure haven't played many minutes either.

Popa is looking at a range of emerging players to create depth.

Is Souttar injured?
