Australian transfers 25-26 Winter

Brisbane have signed 30 year old English striker Chris Long. He scored 6 goals in 25 League Two games last season and didn't appear to start many of those games either.

Seems very much like a budget signing.
How many times have we seen players with average resumes kill it over him though?

Oh man, how depressing. Patafta might as well put up a sign: "Brisbane Roar: open for more disappointment now".

There is literally no way to spin this positively. He's an unsuccessful English fourth tier player at the end of his career. There is NOTHING good here.

I cannot accept that there is not a young Australian player more worthy of a place in the Roar squad. This is the kind of signing that gives the A League a bad name.

Kaz, if you are reading this you should hang your head in shame for not doing better than this.

If a single signing can pre-emptively consign a club's season to the dust bin, this is it.

A hypothetical question for the new season, folks: how low do you think Brisbane Roar's average attendance would have to go before the Bakries would make the decision to press the eject button?

I'm picking 3k, and also picking that we may see it this season. And to think I once bled Orange.

He might have been very cheap? To be fair, he did come up through Everton’s youth setup and represented England at youth level. Agree that it would be better to see a young Aussie being given a chance. Unless Abubakar’s wage demands were ridiculously high, strange that they didn’t sign him.

Been alot of talk lately about absurd fee's being payed 60-70m for a mid table forward from Brentford to United.

People saying a young hazard now goes for 200m pound easily.

What would a peak Kewell or Viduka go for today?

Kewell in 99 I reckon goes for 120-150m pounds easily.

Viduka in that 02-03 season scored 20 league goals, I reckon he goes for 100m easily as a 26yo.

Abubakar rejected a contract offer from Brisbane

This is also the type of signing that takes away a lot of incentive for NPL players to make the jump to the A-League. I’m thinking of those top NPL strikers who are hitting crazy numbers of goals per season but were content to play NPL and work a full time job at the same time. I’m thinking of one from maybe South Melbourne and one from a Macedonian team in NSW (maybe). Who is to know whether these guys could transfer that form to the A-League. Unfortunately, we’ll never know because of signings like this.

That Urocevski guy you’re thinking of had a crack at the AL in his younger years at Sydney.

I remember Rugari writing a piece on him a couple of years back and apparently he had offers (or at least interest) from AL clubs but he didn’t want to play AL.

Doesn't change where he is coming from now. That's all that matters. Not what he did at 16.

Brisbane Roar, under present management and ownership, are an absolute embarrassment. Patafta has proven to be 100% hot air. The next time I see a pic of him I will look for the tethers holding him to the ground. Who knows - maybe he isn't even a real balloon. He could be an AI generated bot.

You would have to take me to the ground in a hearse for me to attend a game again under this regime.

As it is, Volpato could have had a solid international career with Australia but now will likely have nothing. It is hard to imagine an Australian national team coach being inclined to select him after the way he has behaved.
No different from Triantis.

Except that Volpato, as far as I know, has never expressed any desire to play for Oz.

Chris Long was in an EPL squad 7 years ago so he can't be rubbish. He's only 30 and his wiki reads like he may be fairly injury prone so who knows.

I'll wait to see him play before I can know if it's a good signing or not.

probably hopium, but perhaps the shorter season does wonders for him and he can get back to his best
