The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

It would definitely become only those that nominate and can show the financial capability to support the travel and admin costs. Some quick maths, if you started with 10 teams, 18 games H&A, with the existing 8 plus 1 from Qld and 1 from SA, travel costs come out around $750k for the full league, and if clubs paid into a shared pool (rather than pay for their own) it's $75k per team. This assumes 25 people travelling per team, 1 night accommodation twin/share, and moderate flight costs. If you went down clubs pay their own, NSW clubs would be up for $55k, Vic $78k, and Qld/SA $122k.
Given the significant number of flights that Football Australia would be organising for this, they would be receiving a special corporate rate for booking as it would allow them greater flexibility in terms of pricing and amendments. I think to make this work, you would need VIC and NSW teams to part subsidise the travel costs. Given 80% of the league would be from the 2 biggest states, you would need them to step up and drive the development of this competition.

Would be interesting to see how the costing of this competition that the NSD clubs would have undertaken in order to determine operating costs.

I agree that clubs should pay an average of the total travel costs so that teams from single club states aren't put off from joining the competition if they would otherwise have the means to support a team.

Interestingly, if a club like South Melbourne averaged 3000 people per match and made $15 profit on each (between hospitality and ticket), that's $405k for 9 home and away games. It's certainly worthwhile when you factor in increased sponsor value for national exposure on free to air TV and increases in other revenue streams. Teams like SMFC, Preston, APIA, Marconi, SUFC would certainly do well financially. Wolves and teams like Sutherland could also do well if they generate good community support.

I am excited to see how the competition goes this year. I'm expecting there to be a more concerted effort by returning member fed reps (Canberra, Broadmeadows, Bayswater, South Hobart) to put more effort into advertising the games and making the match day experience appealing. I also imagine Sutherland, Adelaide City, and Lions FC will bring much larger support than those they're replacing from last year. If it goes well, I can see 1 or 2 of these new clubs putting their hand up for inclusion in a H&A comp.

On flights; insider tip for those potentially travelling to the Marconi club or Edensor park for games from interstate and not concerned with spending any time in Sydney city itself. The new western Sydney airport which is just about to open is relatively close to those two particular venues in comparison to the main Sydney airport. It’ll be Sydney’s equivalent of Avalon and will make a fly in fly out mission for games there much more plausible

Excellent work. I've done the same thing plotting the numbers over the years but mine come out a little cheaper.

For those 10 teams I've had anywhere from $270-500k, with the updated cost at around $350k. The lower end cost was flying in flying out as much as possible, but that wouldn't be allowed in a professional league. So I only considered flights under 2 hours for potential FIFO as per global pro leagues.

A few factors though:

To keep the costs fair and consistent I only used costs for flights and accommodation during the month of May as this is a crossover between NST and A-League and I can use the numbers for both comps, it also dodged school holiday pricing (March was another option but I ruled that out for some reason). Friday to Saturday overnights. Using FA's hotel partners. Other months outside of May will be either cheaper or costlier, much of a muchness.

I used 23 passengers as per AAFC documents.

This is using public pricing, not corporate or partner pricing. So it should still be cheaper than what we come up with!

Absolutely agree that costs should be equally shared amongst clubs, otherwise it becomes even more of a Sydney+Melbourne love fest and Perth can't ever enter the No Homer's Club.

I can't believe FA won't stump up for that trifling amount, stingy pricks.

If we add Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, and another Melbourne team to make 12, my costs are still under $600k.

Thanks but we are making a weeknd of it if we visit for either... Wont be able to fly out till the next day, or maybe the day after depending on the score :)

The home and away season was meant to be only for the foundation member clubs to run align with the A-League, and the NPL for these clubs would only be U23s.

We were only guaranteed 2 years with this CL format and the FA covering travel costs.

There is still a lot that's up in the air and I think the success of this edition of the Australian Championship will show the FA on what's best moving forward.

After these two seasons, what happens next?

  1. Do licenses for the foundation clubs get revoked?
  2. Will there be another EOI period?
  3. Question Marks over Sydney Olympic. The FA might see Sutherland Sharks as a better replacement as a foundation club.

A lot of speculation at the moment, we will see come end of the year / start of next season.

olympic are shambles but i don't think league positions matter if you've got the money. remember preston were accepted while still in the vpl & fraser were bidding from the 3rd tier

Could a summer comp potentially tempt Melbourne knights to throw their hat in teh ring. Wasn’t one of the main sticking points for them that they didn’t think they would get the crowds in winter but would in summer

Shits me off that FA announce a home and away NST, then they change it to a CL, then they say "we don't know what's next but we ain't paying for it". What's the bloody point of them? Might as well breakaway and run your own league because the clubs would be 99% there already!
