Best overseas leagues for Aussies?

The league needs 4 more sustainable clubs and the season to be started earlier with a small summer break. I think players get fed up of the long off season then to get 6min off the bench one week.

Many moves abroad are also inevitably part of their own football adventure. With more clubs the A League should start to attack AA around 28-34 years old but the cut in pay is an issue.

Valid points. The Portuguese league is a massive drop off after the big ones. The big clubs just walk it. Exposure to European competition is a big thing for Circati and this does open the door the a move to a big 5 league again perhaps with European competition

Excuse my ignorance, what is AA?
 
Yeah Portugal are a step down from seri a but the club is a step up

personally I'd prefer players stay in the big 5. The new champions league format though says you get a lot of games against top opponents. In Portugal, there are I guess 4 games against big 5 quality opponents domestically, not including cup games and a minimum of 8 games in the champions league.
So that's a drop, but if you at least get champions league football it softens the blow

Football isn’t like the nrl and afl where it’s best players only play in Australia, football is part of a much larger global ecosystem where players and coaches come and go for larger aspirations.

If the aleague wants to compete then it needs more money/investment and a more open system and less focus on sports have borders within Australia.

I think the A League can be sustained on a lot of decent NPL players. Add some returning AA, some players from the AFC (a few Central Asians would fancy it) then there's a solid sustainable league with more matches. I know the finances and infrastructure weds a lot of work but I'd rather a modest sustainable league than the flashy ideals that some sponsors and executives want.

You look at Tier 2 UEFA Leagues. They're hot and cold depending on how decent the football is, money flow and player development production line. A lonely game in Austria and Denmark is just part of the ecosystem.

If we only the pollies, big businesses cared about a sport than is connected throughout the whole world.
Imagine Albo saying he wants to turn Australia into a global powerhouse and wants to see all investment into football and more money into the aleague where it can attract some of the highest payers in the world to come to our shores because this is what it will take for football to turn its fortunes around.
But Australia has a strong obsession of keeping its national pastimes alive for not much in return meanwhile they posting some of the highest TV revenues in the world.

But hey let’s invest in a sport that wants to play in Vegas where no one cares about or in a sport where it has no relevance of Australia.
Australia needs to change its priorities with football, not the other way around.

It isn’t good for Socceroo prospects though. All three would probably have been in Socceroo calculations at the end of the AL season, and with Villupillay in the WC squad.

Erdevisie, Belgium, Portugal, Swiss, Denmark, Austria, J League, Saudi league, Norway, English Champ, MLS are recognised as better quality to play international football - if one isn’t going to play Big Five.

I don't see it as a bad thing. We don't have enough professional teams in Australia. We don't get enough senior exposure for younger players. It opens up opportunities for players behind them.

It also throws the players who have moved into longer seasons and a more competitive environment. It's good for development if they play. There's nothing wrong starting in lower leagues and progressing, and I'd argue for some players that may be what they need.

They aren't going to worse leagues than the AL.

A game of two halves isn't it.

Knockout football can conjure up interesting results, but as far as league quality is concerned, I think the Austrian Bundesliga edges out the SPL and should be a destination for Australian players who aren't ready for the Big 5 yet. Also exposes them to European Cup football at a young age.
 
Brazil 38 games + 6-8 games State Leagues (Paulista Gaucho etc)

Paraguay 44 games per league season A&C.

Ecuador 40 games per league season

El Salvador 44 games per league season

Colombia 40 games per season. Better tier teams 52 games per season

Guatemala 44 games per season

Honduras 40 games per season. Better teams 48 games per season.

Plus domestic cup games, plus Lib & Suda games if at the right club. Most of these run close to 10 month seasons.

Another set of avenues for younger players to explore if they want senior experience with players that are hell of a lot hungrier.

It hasn't been a pathway for Australians historically. There are only 2 Australians playing professional football in South America atm. Both are playing largely in youth set-ups.

Will not stop me "sounding like a broken record", but it is an area that is totally overlooked. I've made plenty of points for and a few against. Just learning the "dark arts" from players that have it entrenched, would be a skill set other Australians don't have and with skill and some good luck be a potential candidate for the next "hopefully infanghouloooh free" WC.

Yeah I said it before I’d love to diversify our options as to where our players play. South America would be a good start. We’ve also got barely anyone in Africa either.
