I am surprised at how well that has gone down with people I speak too.. Its been an annoyance for a while now but something as simple as this has endeared her to many families.. smart by the Libs.
 
Are fortnightly general waste bin (assuming red bin means the same in Victoria as it does here) a common thing in Victoria? It varies by Council here in NSW but I don't know any who don't do weekly collections. My council has weekly collections for red and green bins and fortnightly for recycling bins. The red bins are half the size to encourage you to recycle and also use the green waste bin more.

It varies by council but Im pretty sure most of not all the metro ones have switched to fortnightly general waste, alternating with recycling and the Greens waste bin is now for kitchen/food scraps as well as garden waste. Everyone complains about having to use those crappy little recyclable green bags and a separate bin for your food scraps indoors... ti stinks and is messy.... 1st world problems are often the easiest political points tot score with.

People won't think/care about their futures being destroyed but will vote on a red bin.

That's Australia in a nutshell.

(not saying the vic libs will destory futures, but I mean generally the state of the world and politicians being beholden to private interests at ours, the economy and the environment's expense - yet average aussie don't care)

Thats exactly right... Its one of the benefits AND detriments of living in a relatively stable democracy. We are just NOT politically mature enough as a nation to understand whats happening around us (and I include myself). People vote on emotion and catchphrases...

I challenge you to sit and listen, really listen to Pauline Hanson for 15 mins straight on ANY topic.... I mean holy shit , I would count my change after she served me at the fish and chip shop and people want her as PM?

But she tells it like it is!!!!!!

Except she doesn't and contradicts herself at every turn.

But she offers the hope of having a license to villify those some consider (or would like) beneath them. And that's a more powerful and meaningful weapon to them than a prosperous and positive future,

The idea of having someone under them, has tremendous appeal, because they themselves will largely never amount to anything. And it hurts to know someone on their 3rd language, with no connections/network and has only been here for 2 years has already achieved more.

My council went with the food waste in the green bins as well when they started weekly green waste collections a few years back. They gave us all free kitchen bins and green bags to start but the green bags basically couldn't hold the weight of a half eaten apple and usually tore as you were trying to open them up anyway so I don't use them. It's more a local government issue but as State Governments control local Govt they can mandate the LG's do weekly collections. Doesn't sound like a major issue to me but as there are only two in my household it's not as big an issue for someone with a household double or more my size I can see managing waste could be a problem.

Ive got two teenagers at home, who don't care about starving kids in Africa apparently ....

I understand why regional and rural voters are particularly off the major parties. They have good reason to be. TBH though the Nationals have for years only represented miners and huge agribusinesses over family farms and they deserve what's coming for them since they have failed their traditional constinuency.

Same can be said for the other major parties but they are more city-centric and basically approach the issues from different directions but still managing to annoy their rusted on for not being what they used to be.

I remember always being told to eat the vegetables I didn't like. "Don't you know there are starving kids in Africa?"

Me: I heard that - maybe you can send them my vegetables.

... usually followed by a clip around the ears!!

I do care about problems in the world purely as a matter of interest and seeing a lot during my travels how much better off we are here BUT I'm not going to change my way of life nor would my kids....like really.
Nor do I consider who I vote for in saving the planet - sorry.
My vote goes who can manage the economy, our infrastructures (that ain't working for decades) and importantly keeping our place safe.
There are other factors but generally its all about my family doing ok - we donate contribute to a number of charities that I think it quite normal for many average aussies.

ON, would struggle to get my vote purely by the fact she really got nothing as a party to lead the only thing I like she's like a "spoiler" saying many things many people are unsure to say in public in fear of backlash.
Talking politics I listened whilst driving back from the coast good ol Lidia Thorpe going all out as she does on academic Dr.Peter Balan.
Now imagine here and Pauline together - the state of our pollies and then throw in Albo/Wong - what a mosh pit we have ffs.

Many councils in NSW already do red bin collection weekly rather than fortnightly. Victoria should follow suit. Good on her for speaking up about such a commoner issue!
