Yes, true but Southgate wasnt that much of a 'battle tested' club manager.....

He took over at Middlesbrough in 2006 straight from playing without doing prior coaching badges, kept them in the Premier League for a couple of seasons before they suffered relegation, and he was sacked in October 2009.

He got the England job from being FA's Head of Elite Development and Under-21 coach. Most people thought that initially he was the 'caretaker' manager....

He did do a reasonably okay job though.

Howe would probably do a similarly good job with England. He'd have a very good sqaud of players to work with and you'd expect with those players that they will be at the business end of tournaments regardless of who's the manager.
 
From what Iā€™ve read in a couple of different articles from the Athletic on new Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle is he's a highly rated "proper" football coach...

As a product of the Red Bull coaching system and a disciple of Ralf Rangnick, Matthias Jaissle has built a strong reputation as a modern, tactically sharp manager.

He has won the Saudi Super Cup and back-to-back AFC Champions League titles with Al-Ahli.

Transitioning from the Saudi Pro League to the Premier League will obviously bring a different level of week-in, week-out intensity, but according to how the a lot of analysts view him, his tactical foundation is certainly modern and proactive.

By the end of Eddie Howeā€™s tenure, Newcastle were struggling with predictability and had a rigid approach.

Jaissle's tactical worldview is much more fluid....and might just be what Newcastle need, especially given how opponents eventually caught on to Newcastle's patterns under Howe.....

As for your Toffee thought - they actually did better than expected after a slump but yer canā€™t expect much.

I'll be really interested in how Pierre Sage goes at Crystal Palace.....

Without a professional playing background, he's had quite the meteoric rise after decades in youth development and amateur ranks in France. His first senior management role was in 2023 when he was promoted from his position as academy director at Olympique Lyon when sat bottom of Ligue 1.

He turned the club's season around entirely within months, finishing in the European positions.

Last season he joined Lens and guided them to a Ligue 1 runners-up finish and their first-ever Coupe de France title.

It' s probably one of the most remarkable and rapid coaching/ manager trajectories in modern European football!

Sage is primarily a defensive back 3 coach.....

Dropping into a back 5 when out of possession. Tomiyasu is quite an adaptable defender who will fit that system well.

I donā€™t see that great side like weā€™ve seen city or lfc of the last 10yrs.
Plus arteta is vulnerable when under the pump.
Injuries ?
I canā€™t see a canter unless Im reading it utterly wrong.

I just think, using law of averages, managers of top teams under a long tenure generally get over the line.

All the other teams have had major upheaval. Will take time to gel and get used to the managers new system, that time is generally points lost and ascendency gifted to arse.

I think it would take a generational bottling (not saying arse aren't necessarily incapable of doing that :) )

You never know, with Rashford back in town, maybe Yanited do the business, wouldn't that be great to see LFC? ;)
 
Bookies have Man City much more likely to be relegated than Spurs or Brighton.


Vote of no-confidence in Maresca? Expecting a big points deduction? Or a complete lack of faith if Rodri goes, as expected? Maybe Maresca/Rodri combination but those odds suggest they expect MC to finish a distant 8th.

Iā€™d say itā€™s to do with the 115 charges that we all know wonā€™t result in anything more than a slap on the wrist, if that.
