Commonwealth Games

It’s friggin embarrassing tbh.
I don’t know why but it’s an utter joke of a tournament to me now.
First we more so tanked the games.
Near on killed it.
Next we provided Glasgow millions to support them getting us out of the poop.
Farce of a games compared to what it once was.
Sorry to offend but the way I see it.
All the more reason why the Games desperately needs some format of ⚽ to regain interest/legitimacy, esp. among the majority-nonwhite nations of the Commonwealth that, to put it generously, don't necessarily get off on athletics/swimming and the like..but absolutely do w/football.

Definitely agree that we need some form of football tournament at the Commonwealth Games in future cycles, whether that be for age grade sides or even senior women's teams to help give players valuable match experience and game time outside of the Olympics and other major tournament cycles.

Should be under-23s for the women’s. They already do the Olympics and there’s just too many games. Look at all the ACL injuries.

Yeah I agree. I don’t think that people don’t care about athletics or swimming, I think they definitely do, but they care more about football because they follow it outside of international tournaments. For example, few watch the athletics or swimming championships, but everyone watches the Olympics and lots of people watch the Comm Games. Football however is followed religiously outside major tournaments. Billions watch the World Cup, and a large portion of those also watch their own leagues.

I wasn’t implying that those sports aren’t cared about at all, but at the end of the day they’re hardly the sporting opiate-of-the-masses that ⚽️ is, as you yourself point out.

In light of what I posted a while back on this thread, after 2030 the likelihood of ⚽️ finally being included in the Games will be the greatest it’s ever been..so it’ll beg the question of what format/s it’ll be under, as we’ve been speculating in this thread.

As you suggest, for the women’s it’d ideally be an Under-23 tournament analogous to how the Olympics is for the men’s(esp. since there currently aren’t any women’s international tournaments specifically for that age-level), but it’s obv the plausibility/logistics of the men’s-event on which the whole premise hinges.

As I’ve suggested, it’d be no skin off my nose if that were restricted to amateur/semi-pro players with only 3 full-pros allowed per team(analogous to the no. of overage players allowed in the Olympic men’s) - it’d still be better than nothing.

To make it even more interesting, only the minnow-nations eg. from the Subcontinent & Pacific might be permitted to field their full-strength senior squads.

And in addition/in lieu of 11v11 being unworkable for whatever reason, it’d be nothing to include Futsal and/or beach-football - they’re bound to be drawcard events no matter how you slice it.

So really, the ball’s in the CGF’s court to make it happen - and considering the edition just passed that is, in my memory, easily hands-down the most uncared about publicly..⚽️ really is their best bet for regaining lost ground.

Some good points raised, BA 81.

As a former competitive sprinter, it is far better to watch than compete.

I don't think football will ever be included in the Commonwealth Games, and I don't think it should be.
Rather hubristic to think that only football can save the future of a less than popular event.
Surely there is too much football?
