There is definitely a change in focus for us this season.

So many Roar B signings and youth prospects in the squad.

I have mixed feelings on it:

1/ Having young promising players develop, and forge a cohesive positive attacking side is a plus. Being young they are going to be learning to play senior football 'our way' whatever that is now, and with the enthusiasm and energy of youth to combine with less rusted on bad habits we could see a strong side emerging. it also feeds into our obvious marketing and on-selling strategy for the club.

2/ The Roar B side has been losing by a goal or so most games this season in the NPL. Without a core of older and more experienced players of decent quality in the senior squad I am concerned about how a struggling B side can be expected to step up and compete with other aleague sides this season.

I am, without doubt, enthusiastic about our prospects and the young players getting contracts and game time. Ever hopeful but wary...
 
We are recruiting a very good B team here. Should go up at the first time of asking 😂

Seems a good signing on a decent enough length deal. Hopefully we now turn our attention to bringing in some known quality to mix with all the potential we have recruited.
 
My suspicion is that Roar are signing all these young players on scholarship contracts because that is very cheap ($45k for a scholarship player?). Then hoping that some turn out to be good enough to be somewhat competitive in the A League, meaning they don’t have to sign so many senior players on larger salaries.
If by a stroke of luck one of them turns out to be the next Tom Waddingham or Lucas Herrington, then will they have learnt their lesson when selling them on in terms of maximising revenue to the club, or will be content to just get a quick sugar hit?
 
Well that sounds plausible and is probably a large put of the strategy. We still have a hard cap that we need to spend. 12/15 blokes on minimal wage is still barely a million on your wage budget.

Experience still needs to be signed.

Our performance against Sydney Olympic will be a good test for how we are going generally as a side.

We have seen quite a few aleague sides stumble in the Cup this early in their pre-season. I am looking forward to the game.

For experience we have currently got Joel King, Tate Russell, Dean Bouzanis, Milorad Stajic, Nathan Amanatidis and Marko Ilic. Around them we have Justin Vidic, Dimi Valkanis, Hosine Bility and Noah Maieroni who have some level of aleague experience.

No way we can say we have a plethora of quality experience but we are not exactly lacking either.

Certainly no big names - especially in the consistent goal scoring category where we have been weak for many seasons.

35 years old, pretty impressive pedigree. AM looks to be his position as best I can make out. Possibly a direct replacement in the squad for O'Shea. Played under Muscat and Kewell at Yokohama f Marinos. Interestingly, played the first leg of 2024-24 ACL final which Yokohama won but apparently he missed a good chance. Was subsequently left out of the return leg by HK for tactical reasons, which Yokohama lost, resulting in title defeat.
 
He covers experience at the pointy end of the field - which is something we definitely can do with.

Is it just my eyes or does the picture in the above article show strapping on his right leg just above the knee? I am hoping it is just my eyes. Edit: Third picture down.

Would be a good signing I think too.

As a side note - he gets dropped after missing a good chance. There wouldn't be many aleague forwards on the pitch if that was the standard response to missing a good chance...

Michael Ruhs would have played about 3 games in his whole career if that was the response.

16 appearances over 1000 minutes in the K1 this year should put to bed the worries about fitness/age as much as one can when signing a 35 year old.

I agree - but I still like Ruhs.

He is capable of making 'something' happen when nothing is working in build up play and I always appreciated the glimmers of hope when he forced his way through somewhere.
 
When I first saw Ruhs play, I thought I was looking at our future Roos striker. So much pace and strength. He has always been a player on the edge of a breakthrough season but it never quite happens.

I wish I felt more optimistic about this season. I can't help but feel that Valkanis is not a head coach.

It is on Valkanis to prove himself capable after the good start last season.

I really liked the change he brought to our club with the positive football and I expect more of that. Shame we had injuries and sold our great defender before he could pass a full season test. Can't judge until opponents have had a chance to break down our playing style while we are still actually doing it well.

I am getting excited for the Cup game in a few days. New season hopes are an affliction I have no desire to be cured of.

Apparently have 20 signed so far according to transfermarkt and its only players upgraded from our youth team that are “Queenslanders” which I count as 5. Assuming none have moved up to play for the B team like page did from Adelaide.

James Durrington is listed as still contracted but has since moved to Gold Coast United.
