I always get nervous playing Uruguay before a major tournament. Ray Baartz was felled in his prime. For the young folk:
Wiki: "Baartz was selected in the Australian squad to play in the World Cup finals in 1974 but his career was prematurely ended after he was felled by a blow from Uruguay's Luis Garisto (known as el Loco (in English crazy)) in a friendly international fixture at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The blow to his throat had damaged his carotid artery.
Ray currently still lives in Newcastle."

agree that would be ideal, but I think we have problems with our coaching pathways (not just player pathways)

Foreign coaches cost more usually for worse results given a local coach of a similar price. Maybe there is a decent flexible coach out there that is high enough quality but will coach for 1.2mil AUD a year

Aussie coaches you are limited in the talent pool

I genuinely think its a conundrum

If I think of a coach who pragmatically wins against tougher opponents and dominates weaker teams.....only example I can think of is Johnny A from the Bergers. But no way would you go from npl to nt and it seems way too hard to get a gig in the a league for some reason

I thought Arnie had a good amount of flexibility

I think to play proactive football and get results at world cup level you probably need to be around 200mil (just a guestimate). Hopefully we end up thereabouts in 2030

So still way off by that measure. I'm sure it helps having more expensive players but I don't give it a lot of weight. I think if you sit there thinking oh our XI doesn't add up to X dollars we're only good enough to park-the-bus, it will hold us back.

I guess i just havent seen too many examples of weak but proactive teams being successful, whether relegation battlers or world cup underdogs

Trying to think of any? Costa rica in 2014?

But there do seem to be examples of defensive underdogs causing shockwaves

In any case, hope it is all academic in a few years
