This is not really a surprise, as he had problems with epilepsy since he was about 40, and had an operation to try and fix it.

He was an outstanding header of the ball, almost too eager to get the ball forward I sometimes thought.
Banning headers completely is probably not the answer. I agree with banning headers for under 12s, and for older players limit the amount of headers in training. When players reach 18 they could perhaps sign a waiver, saying they realise the dangers of heading and then head the ball as much or as little as they want in senior football.

In my experience of lower level amateur football, often only two or three players in a team are prepared to consistently head the ball. The others never, or rarely. I don't think the majority of ex players are at risk, and you certainly hear less about it now than with earlier generations.
