Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

I agree player development is non-linear but something doesn't add up here. This kid had his 2nd academy rejection in 2019, goes to Italy to trial where Roma accepts him, then gets Totti as his agent and makes his Serie A debut in 2021. 2 years from an A League academy reject to a big club in Serie A? That's an incredible rise.

What did Roma see that the academies in Australia didn't?
Some decisions on the surface appear perplexing, my club Melbourne Victory for instance promoting 4 youth team players yet the only kid I thought could actually step up, and often the youth teams only outlet for the season, Patrick Wall released.

Luca De Silva, a winger I thought certain to play seniors, played out of position to fit in Nissan Velupillay and Gianluca Iannucci, also released.

Teng Kuol, thought had potential to make it as a screening number 6 but continually tried as a box to box midfielder or centre forward.

I really enjoy listening to people who don't watch much football who watch someone like Morroco or even the USA. In this case it was my missus.

Her two main gripes:

Why do we pass it so slowly and always backwards?

How come our players can't shoot very hard with power like the other teams?

Sums up Australian football pretty well lol

Wee're really mising Goodwin in that dept. The Goodwin- Souttar Jack in the Box combo had a very good return rate. Volpato's corners have been weak. We are lucky to have 8 rest days before Egypt. Volpato in those 8 days should be like little Evie in the YOUI ad on SBS
Been saying all tournament we should have picked Goodwin over Leckie. Goodwin wasnt fit but neither was leckie, but in Goodwins case hes 2 yrs younger and has a laser of a left boot on him. If we are chasing the game against a low block there are few better players in world football to throw on in final mins to whip crosses in.

I would have picked Goodwin and Boyle of Nish and Leckie.

Its crazy this is the same oniell as a few months ago

To add to that i think hes covered the most distance of any player this world cup.

Much maligned player but been outstanding this world cup and isnt being given enough credit.

Whilst Bos is our most exciting/talented player with highest ceiling, Souttar and ONeill have arguably been our best.

Huge number of turnovers too which was a weakness in his game (tho @Decentric stats from some of his friendlies seemed to indicate improvement recently) a real surprise this wc

Yeah for me O'Neill and Metcalfe were the two I had my strongest doubts about being good enough at this level. But they have been arguably two of our best players which is really pleasing to see.
