"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

How about no?

I've had an absolute gutful of these cunts who give those against the game yet another opportunity to bag the game, just behave like civilised human beings ffs how fucking hard is it?

This flog who sexually assaulted the girl needs to be tried as an adult and given a very hefty jail sentence.

Enough is enough.
I didn't read the article and I'm not justifying anyones actions. Your comment was directed at an entire State of people as though they're all responsible for the bad behaviour of a few. They're not.

My comment is all to do with the constant bad behaviour at sporting events.

Besides a few well documented incidents over the years in NSW you simply don't see anywhere near the amount of stupidity at sporting events in other states that we constantly see in Melbourne.

This isn't unique to Victoria. A ref had his jaw broken by a supporter at local football game in Padstow recently. Flares, organised fights, and missiles thrown at WSW v Sydney derby. Crowd fights at a Roosters v Rabbitohs game. These are a couple of examples from NSW off the top of my head.

Of course you are right. There are idiots and angry people in all jurisdictions. Some comments possibly have an agenda behind them.

They see Football as an existential threat to Aussie Rules, and they're right to do so.

AFL had a cult-like grip over Melbourne for a century but it's hard to keep that up when people can open their phone and see actual skilled athletes from around the world, without leaving their home. They have to play dirty to survive.
Haven’t seen you post before, welcome to the forum. Spirit.

We are our own worst enemy at local competition level.
However, on the international stage, we have lots for them to fear, the World cup, the Olympics, the Matildas, the O/S sides.
I have always said, yes the other codes dont fear thr A-League but they do football.
Well said, R.

I am pissed off at the ABC because they really don't report anything on the A-League. Early morning news - nothing but they will put something which has much lower attendance or importance on. Ever since the ABC got taken over by the Sydney mafia, the Melbourne listeners have had to put up with absolute crap.

And when I was at the office last Monday, me telling people that Patrick Beach does the same thing week in week out for Melbourne City, they were stunned.
The Beach comment is typical and topical.

Also, Beach has excelled in the ACL.

Organised fights!

Since many of the WSW Red and Black Block walked away from active support, has this occurred since?

I can remember MV and WSW supporters meeting for an organised brawl! Weird.

At it's core, the hostility to football is not really about the AFL or NRL. It's this Australian colonial mindset. The same reason most nations born out of British colonisation have largely rejected the sport until recent times but took to other codes and home grown pastimes. In contrast, the game spread like wildfire in places that weren't directly colonised but were exposed to the Empire's soft and mercantile power.

It's hard not to see two very distinct visions of Australia and the correlation between those who detest the game on one side, and those that embrace it on the other. It's not just a partisan thing either, it's woven into class, migration and education.

What about cricket and rugby being British but making it big here? Is it because they were seen as "upper class" sports?

It's the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
'Til we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle
The circle of life
Believe or not I haven't actually seen the movie! But I was thinking of "Can you smell the fear tonight?"
