Socceroos vs Paraguay 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇵🇾

Tbf Mooy was a late bloomer, Terry Antonis was actually ahead of him in pecking order, who ange picked over mooy at 2015 AC. I think Luongo is close to the most underutilised australian player possibly ever. Should have close to 100 caps. Unfortunately came at the same time as Rogic amd Mooy. Ceiling was so high tho, didnt have a flaw in his game. Made a couple of bad moves at key points in his career, but still should have got more caps, especially after Rogic retired. Didnt get a single minute at WC18.
Luongo was so great in the Asian cup 2015 & we should have build the Socceroos team around him.
Mooy, I would kill to have Mooy running around in this WC, he's as good as Bresc. If you watched the WC qualifiers against Japan pre 2022, the only player the Japanese didn't press, because they knew his 1st touch was their level.

Farina, Arnie and Gus were the most balanced coaches weve had and in the case of the latter 2, the most tactically flexible.

Venables and Ange both ultra attacking, whilst Pim, BVM, and now Popa all defensive coaches.

Farina was tactically naive, without any particular dogma. Although he was closer to the Venables/Ange end of the spectrum than he was in the centre.

I'd agree with the rest and what do you know our two best showings at a WC (jury still out with Poppa) align with a tactically flexible approach.

Put New Zealand’s midfield and our defence, and the ANZAC’s might do some damage, a shame New Zealand can’t defend a lead lol.

Don't disagree with you.

However, in 2022 we had a couple of A-League 'plodders' Craig Goodwin (score against France & Argentina) and Matthew Leckie (score against Denmark).

We just watched a bunch of lower level plodders Capo Verde just Draw with Top 5 leagues players Uruguay.
Sure mate, but for every plodderville fc victory there are about 10 thrashings. Has plodderville fc ever won the World Cup or champions league? The exception doesn’t disprove the rule.

Rule number one is just put your best fxcking team our there. Formation and tactics comes second.

Not sure what you’re talking about.

Our current starting GK plays in the A league. One of our staring wingbacks plays in Austria. Two of our starting centre mids play in the Championship, and one just got relegated to League One, and isn’t even a regular starter. Our attacking fast forwards play in the Championship. How are these our strengths then?
The Championship is literally one of the best leagues in world football. Pat Beach isn’t our starting goalie, he’s started two games. Our starting goalie plays in La Liga.

Would Chris Wood still start over Mo Touré? Most of the A-League Redditors disagree but I think his ceiling is higher than Chris Wood's was, plus he's much younger than him.

But yeah in other words the All Whites, for the most part, are pretty shit. Haiti destroyed them and we would probably comfortably beat Haiti. Cape Verde would probably beat them.

You'd think in a combined Anzac starting XI that Chris Wood and Mo Toure would start alongside each other in the forward line.

If you placed Wood in a front 3 with Irankunda and Volpato, Wood would play the Viduka role very, very, very well I think

Luongo + injuries
The great tragedy of this era was we never consistently saw a midfield of Mooy and Luongo behind Rogic. It could have been 2022 but Rogic pulled out and Luongo seems to just have been disregarded by Arnie. Granted he had dropped to L1, but he had a good year and would surely have been a better pick than Baccus. Chatgpt found me 9 matches where the three started together.

Rogic's battle with injuries and the issues with his family really stopped him from being one of the great ones. Having said that I wonder if he would have made a Popa team.

As it stands draw has us playing Iran in r32.
