Socceroos vs USA 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺 🇺🇸

I think we have to play a RWB.

It has been a specific target area for teams against us and if we have 3 players sort of drifting around they will either all go or no one will go and we will get mixed up.

We need a dedicated defender who knows it is their job to limit the attacks there and the players around him know they have to cover him when he can't stop it clean. No different to marking Mbappe - you have to dedicate someone to the position and also recognise he is going to get past some time.

For Italiano v Geria, I would have Italiano if he has the legs. We can't afford to build a team of defenders without the attacking side. If we sacrifice our attacking options we will concede the defensive strength of having cohesive attacking options ready to counter and we will get picked apart and squashed. Generally speaking (across the park), we have to keep some of the US players with a mind on defending too more than us just having a few players forward. Make them play 5 players with a defensive focus out of fear of what we might construct on top of a long ball to speedsters.
It was Geria who was up high on the right and provided the pass to McGree who then provided the assist for Behich's goal against Japan in the 90th minute in the WCQ in Perth last year

Makes the hydration break crucial for player safety I suppose?
I see you turning into footballs Attenborough hahaha
Spares the animals/planet - oh the players in mid 20 temps lol hydration the poor things.....

On another note, I wonder how many supporters @ home have set macca uber delivery times for the breaks

Im more concerned that Bechkam already has 8 Grimace cups... all those big Macs hes gonna turn into a fat prick.

As an American fan - CB Tim Ream is the weak link if he gets the start (which is expected).
There is no way the Australian coaching staff doesn't know this.
He’s looked completely cooked for pace in MLS this year (he's old).

US will prob go back three and try to shield him with athletic partners in back 3 (Freeman + Richards) - but you can't hide a slow CB in world cup. It should match up well for Australian strength in counterattack speed of Irankunda/Toure/athletic MF)
This.. ppl keep saying we need more pace in our defense and ball playing in midfield.. if anything we need to double down on the low block with counter attack again this game.. usa have fast forwards who are completely nullified if we play the low block again, and then have slow CBs who will struggle defending space when we counter them. I expect an unchanged lineup and same tactics.

The Paraguay game in contrast is where we need to introduce more skilled creators like Volpato and Hrustic to break down their low block, and more pace at the back in herrington to defend the counter.

Good man, wants to focus on his football. I see nothing wrong with that

I see plenty wrong with it.

If its good enough for Harry Kane to learn some German, its bloody well good enough for him! This is Bayern Munich we're talking about.

It reveals how raw he really is about professionalism at the highest level.

yep agree, learning the language your playing in is vital.
Most top players do so even before they end up at X club.
Nothing like hearing/understanding what opposing players are saying besides the bants, its the comms you get to read, signs of stress etc......

Agree with you both. Its the quickest way to connect himself to the fanbase and shows respect to the hosts.

All he needs is a handful of phrases "Hello", "thank you", "I am honoured to play here", "Which way to the nearest rub'n'tug?" that sort of thing.

Someone had said include a RWB but have him concentrate on being a defender and not pushing up. I sort of ran that in with the suggestion of Geria over Italiano.

I got the impression that Italiano is much quicker on his feet in the reflex movement category, and quicker to change direction if an attack goes wrong. Coming from the one proper game against Turkey maybe I am being unfair on Geria.

I rate Italiano as instant speed and reaction time over Geria's more gradual speed and experience in positioning.

I could be wrong with both but that was my take on Italiano from the Turkey game. Loved his fast feet defending one on one.

Former Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri is a big fan of Patrick Beach. She say he will be "relishing in the moment" after his astounding WC debut.
"He's enjoying the pressure and I feel like that's where the best goalkeepers are flourishing, they enjoy and they know that diamonds are made with a huge amount of pressure."
Barbieri said Beach was very dedicated and brave and had the "mental toughness" to be a high-level goalkeeper.

Bubs is a legend, she knows what she’s talking about!

Nestory can't. Famously said he couldn't be arsed learning the language when he was with Bayern.
He speaks Kirundi though, and possibly a bit of Swahili from his time in Tanzania. I’m sure he’d know basic German from his time in Munich and Zürich (where they speak Swiss German which can be different to a degree). Doesn’t Bayern require their players to learn conversational German?

oh that provides me so much confidence far out
I mean she’s got over 30 years experience (she started in 1996 and still plays albeit rarely as a backup keeper for City) and was capped 86 times for the Tillies. I’d expect someone with that level of experience in football to have good takes.

But then ask yourself the question; why start to learn the language of a country that was always going to loan you out elsewhere? He was sent to Switzerland if you can recall.

Harry Kane should learn the language of the country where you are paid $1million per week to play. Irankunda was 17 (16?) when he was transferred. He just needs to focus on his developement.
