Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

This exactly!! Yes, Turkey did dominate possession. But you’ve gotta be more respectful and humble when discussing your opponents. That type of mentality caused us to lose to Fiji once.

I did a Uni subject with the Fijian captain from that series.

The harsh reality is this: Australia arrived believing they could win. Turkey arrived believing they should win. One mindset creates history. The other creates headlines like this.
That there is an excellent explanation!!! Turkey felt entitled to the three points, like it was given to them by God. You have to fight hard for three points, just like you have to campaign hard for votes and work hard for pay.

A bit hard to know where to start. What an incredible day! Never would have picked that line up. None of us would. I've been critical of O'Neill and Metcalfe and not 100% sold yet on Okon Engstler or Italiano, but all were exceptional today. Hats off to Beach. Crazy to think he's just 22. Souttar just phenomenal. Brilliant start by the whole team. So pumped! Geez I hope we can beat the US.

Thought Güler was being humble for a second. The Circati elbow show deflection wasn't a penalty and neither was the Bos hand. Both players didn't everything to minimise foul play.

I want to support Turkiye and wish them success in their remaining games because I think the game was played in a good spirit (and I've travelled there and loved it), but the post-match comments by Guler and Calhanoglu are disrespectful. To be blaming the refs where VAR is scrutinising everything and to be saying that they were dominant glosses over the fact that this was a perfectly executed defensive master-class by Australia, where they were out-coached and we scored two very fine goals in open play. We didn't score because we were big or physical. We sliced open their defence and punished them. They'll be hurting after losing a match that 68 million people expected them to win, after a 24 year absence. But please, a little grace and respect.

If we'd won off a penalty and some scrappy set play the maybe I'd feel some of the analysis is right but I felt our tactics were so correct to nullify the opponent and our goals were classy strikes.

Exactly, people complain about our style of play and while it was certainly boring in many games before the World Cup, we played incredibly this arvo and I can’t complain about a single thing.

If Turkey can’t make it out of the group then we’ve gotta stop calling Turkey the “dark horse” at every tournament. 2002 was an incredible journey for them but they’ve underachieved ever since.
2020 dark horse was a horse made of ash.

100%, not only did we score twice, we scored crackers from open play twice! Haramball doesn’t do that.

I thought that too for a sec. But nah, just more crying.

It was such a dogfight. I was applauded every ball win and clearance. Souttar was immense. I'll watch again but I think Burgess also put in an excellent shift. They all did.
