Turkey under President Recip Tayyip Erdoğan (a nationalist dictator) changed their official English name from the “Republic of Turkey” to the “Republic of Türkiye” to match the Turkish name (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti), so in official contexts people refer to it as Türkiye (the native name). However, the common name remains Turkey. Why is everyone calling them Turkey-yah?
I appreciate the native pronunciation would be different, it just seems strange and a bit cringe.
