The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

man of all the games they had to win why that one haha

I heard a rumour that they are throwing the league because they plan to have a b team in the npl?
Hanlin has said a few times that’s he wants Olympic to focus on the championship and views the npl going forward as a place to prioritise/develop youth and therefor doesn’t want to waste money on player wages in it. Bit premature for that imo when the championships future is still very much insecure. Might just be talking out of his ass to justify cost cutting

I don't see what the issue is. You can't change the rules while the season is on and the 5th or 6th best team in NSW will be better than most sides from other states.
Of course they can, just ask Capital Football 😅

5th to 7th in NSW potentially being better than 2nd place elsewhere doesn't mean anything, they might be better than 1st place in some federations as well! So we drop those 1st places because NSW is awesome? We're not running on coefficients yet.

Could be worse, could be olympic in 16th place!
Yeah but they bought their way in, not going through by the winning spot.

Speaking of buying in... How are the eight clubs still entered as foundation clubs when their guarantees for a spot were refunded? Do they have to stump up again for their guaranteed spot? If not, why not? I'm scratching my head with that one. Anyone out there asking these questions?

Su58 and apia a chance to knockout a league teams
APIA can definitely go for cupsets in the Hahn Australia Cup competition proper again this year and Sydney United 58 have previously made it all the way to the grand final so there's no reason why they can't knock out the A-Leagues sides again.

Agreed, a Sutherland or Rockdale would still be much stronger than what the other sides / states produce.

don't look at the Rockdale one off game, they went down to 10 men early

OK this is really bugging me now. Current NSW Championship representative in 5th place, Rockdale, just got belted by Wanderers academy 5-0. Wanderers are just below Rockdale in 6th, and the Sydney academy just below them in 7th with a game in hand.

It's now looking a strong chance that the NSW representative for the Championship will finish in 5th to 7th place, the latter if the academy teams finish 5th and 6th.

Whoever is in charge of the Championship needs to jump on this immediately as it would be an embarrassing farce if 5th to 7th is their "winner" qualifying for the Championship. Pass the slot on to the runner up from any other federation. Announce this now before any club gets upset.

Tbh the whole system of the comp is only acceptable if taken as a temporary place holder until such time as it becomes a home and away league format. If this is what it ends up being, an expanded npl national finals, then fuck off the “foundation clubs” system entirely and just have the top x number of clubs qualify from each state Ala the champions league

and that's working out well for the teams they changed the rules for - with that solitary victory between the two of them coming against eachother, and the draw coming against the team in 9th (on 5 points). And also being one of the two clubs majorly affected by poor fields resulting in games being moved around.

It’s also not a proper league. It has been the foundation clubs & 8 state winners/best of the rest. Why is this an issue all of a sudden? If it is, how do you rewrite the rules and how do you judge who takes the extra spot?

Not all of a sudden, I pointed it out a while back. And now it's worse because the spot will go to 5th, 6th, or 7th. That's a joke, lacks creditability and can't be taken seriously.

As I mentioned earlier, the simple solution:

I'd rather that spot be given to ANY runner up from any other federation, instead of 4th/5th placed! 🤮

The seven other runner-ups put their balls in a pot, draw one out. Done. Give it to an actual runner-up, not whichever team is next best down the food chain behind the clubs that have bought in. There's no merit in that.

Little of column A and a little of column B to be honest. I understand exactly what HG is saying, but how you implement it by merit is tough. I don't think you can have a random draw (unless it's not between all of the other runner ups) - Tasmania and ACT for example do not deserve to have a second spot. Unless they do some sort of coefficient thing, how it is at the moment is the only fair way. Like tFL also says - that's just the way it is. It's just one of those dilemmas that happened, very similar to the whole "What happens for England's Champions League spots if Aston Villa finishes exactly 5th in the Premier League?"

I think it is a non issue. Hopefully we'll have a proper home and away league soon and the best teams will be there, regardless of what state they are from.
