Age grade Matildas teams thread

Three changes for the Junior Matildas. Matilda Dias Wadewitz, Mary Dal Broi and Abbie Puckett come on in the 58th minute for Claire Corbett, Keira Sarris and Kaya Jugovic respectively.

Full time at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium. The Junior Matildas lose 4-0 in their rematch against Japan in the under-17 Women's Asian Cup semi-finals, bringing their campaign to an end in the absence of a third place playoff. Attention now turns to a debut under-17 Women's World Cup campaign for the Junior Matildas in Morocco in October with qualification for next year's edition of the under-17 Women's Asian Cup, also in China, already secured.

Every time we play Japan I swear to God.
Japan have more cohesion and discipline compared to the Matildas at all levels from under-17s through to the senior national team setup and clearly there are problems with the system if our age grade sides cannot contend with the Asian powerhouse nations in Japan and North Korea which does not bode well for us.

Is it a prayer?
If so we are going to need more than prayers. We are totally out of Japan’s league and we are quickly being caught up with by many of the teams in the rest of Asia.
Agree that there are problems with the youth development system for the Matildas especially since the only methods of developing youth prospects we have are Member Federation comps, the A-League Women and the Emerging Matildas Championships whereas Japan has a more cohesive system from high school level onwards which has led to them becoming the best team in Asia at all levels, and if there is no change to the current system then we risk stagnating and falling behind the rest of the continent.

Out of Japan’s league, yes. As for the other teams, they’re catching up but unfortunately many still have backwards attitudes to women in sport and don’t even have proper facilities so it’ll take a while. Hopefully we capitalise on that and choose to improve our development programs in Australia.

However, I still think we can win Asian Cups, but squad selection is a serious problem. Had Joe Montemurro not’ve been so naïve in the last final and made subs then we would’ve had a fighting chance of winning. Youth teams are hard to judge the success of since youth football doesn’t always align with senior football. We see this in the men’s game with Nigeria having five under-17 World Cups.

Junior Matildas drawn into group F for their debut under-17 Women's World Cup campaign along with Spain, Mexico and Chile.
