While the general world cup thread would be used I think users eyes and habit will be attracted by the word matches in the title. Internet users are a funny bunch. The other thread is good for travel etc and Australia has some excellent destinations with wonderful surrounds.

Massive tournament predictor now online.

Some real crackers including Gijon 82 Austria Algeria with something to settle.

We get Bafana Bafana again like in 2010.

Got wrap my head around likely Playoff winners.

Which matches are you looking forward to most?

Netherlands- Japan
Uzbekistan- Colombia
Argentina-Austria
Norway- France

Forgot I'd created this so this will do.

Head coach Ralf Rangnick has two more high-profile options available for the 2026 World Cup. Both Borussia Dortmund's Carney Chukwuemeka and Eindhoven's Paul Wanner are now eligible to play for the Austrian national team . This information comes from an entry on the FIFA Change of Association Platform , which provides information on all FIFA-approved changes of association.

Famous last words but looking at a lot of the fixtures and H2H being the tiebreaker, we may see some pretty clear situations even before the last group games are played.

While no results are guaranteed, Argentina facing Jordan last seems a foregone conclusion.

Predicting the following

Winner: Argentina

Runner-up: France
Other semis: Brazil, Spain

Biggest surprise: Japan who end up narrowly losing to France in the quarters

Biggest flop: Definitely some Euro team who can’t play in a different continent. I predict Portugal losing to Ghana in end of 32.

Best performance by a minnow: Kiwis

Spain to win. Agree about Japan. Croatia to flop I reckon (aging team).

I’m thinking the South American teams will do well in the N.America WC. They’ve played there plenty of times.

I expect a lot of Euro teams to struggle away from their home continent. There’s a couple of them that will underperform. Croatia is a good shout.

I think England might have a good tournament.

If I were to predict each group:

A. South Korea, Mexico, Czech Republic, South Africa
B. Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia, Qatar
C. Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti
D. Turkey, USA, Australia, Paraguay
E. Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Curaçao
F. Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
G. Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand
H. Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde
I. France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq
J. Argentina, Austria, Jordan, Algeria
K. Portugal, Colombia, DR Congo, Uzbekistan
L. England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

Why do I feel like Japan's match set up could put them in a hole? Last time they overcame Germany and Spain first and last and lost to Costa Rica in the middle. If they lose to The Netherlands here that tough Tunisia game really becomes to much more crucial and Sweden might be going well by then too. Such an interesting group.

I hope Turkey do a Euro 2020 flop. The new AFC teams may turn up or they might just be so submissive under this new pressure. It's not an Asian Cup anymore.

I think Japan will top their group.

Netherlands have more tournament nous at this level imo.
Yeah on paper its going to be a fascinating match and one of the many Im looking forward to. In fact, despite the fact that some of countries participating are way way way way down the pecking order, I like how the groups have panned out for once... Some of the ones Im keen to watch and which may very well give us the tournament "classic match" are:

E. Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Curaçao
F. Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
H. Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde
I. France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq
L. England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

So many interesting groups and with H2H can see a flip in the knockout pathway.

Spain and Uruguay can probably control their group and then they face off where they may have an interest in going a certain way.
Starting to get some Pre-Mundial vibes going now... Spain and Urgauay "should" but I think Spain v Saudi is going to be a surprising match... Also looking forward to seeing how Arnie goes against France with a more adventurous team. England v Croatia in the groups stage? Oh boy thats a semi final worthy match. Switzerland v Bosnia is basically the seniors vs the ressies.
