Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Does anyone know if they are streaming the cup match tomorrow night?

Im on the other side of town until pretty late and wont be able to make it to Port.

South Melbourne women got the job done 2-1 over Avondale in their NPLW Victoria game courtesy of two late goals with Alana Burn scoring in the 89th minute and Heidi Dalton scoring in the first minute of second half stoppage time to earn their sixth win of the season and fourth win in a row. The result sees us move into the top four on 20 points at the conclusion of matchday 10, two points behind ladder leaders Box Hill United and second-placed Boroondara Eagles who are level on 22 points, bearing in mind that Boroondara still have a game in hand.

Some interesting points coming out of the interview that Sam Poutakidis had on Radio 3XY last night.

Apparently upon the conclusion of the OFC Pro League, the club is planning on loaning some youth players from the U23s to VPL1 and VPL2 clubs. I'm not sure if Football Victoria allows players to be loaned to other clubs under the existing player registration system. If doable, I think that's an excellent idea as its important for those youth players to play against men and continue their development.

As expected, the club will prioritise the OFC Pro League in the month of May. That tells me that we may see too many U23s players utilised and not enough reserve players left behind. I really hope they do not forsake the NPL Victoria competition.

Imagine being asked to stay behind whilst our club chase International silverware?

It would be disappointing to the player if they were asked that, but they also have to understand they are being paid for their footballing services. For the month of May they would be playing against Heidelberg, George Cross, possible Round 6 Dockerty Cup fixture, and Avondale. That's a month of guaranteed first team football.

My understanding is that it isnt the U23 players to be loaned out but the fringe squad players utilised in OFC Pro. Makes sense as we have an almost 30 player roster and, with a few signings expected next window, that is too many squaddies that will NOT be getting regular match minutes when we go down to only three competitions (hahah what an amazing sentence to type, ONLY THREE comeptitons).

Loan them out to lower clubs and keep them on our books for when a player transfer system is in place or we need them back....

Exactly right... I chat to a few of the players and the dressing room is excellent, the whole mentality is a collective, any silverware has been contributed to by ALL of them and they know it.

We need to rest some players tomorrow night against Bulleen. The opposition will be up for this as they have nothing to lose.

I would start the team with the following players:
Lopez
O'Sullivan
Inglese
Jankovic
Skapoulas
Menealou
Leech
Cocks
Mesorouni
Dovison
Swibel

Having Jankovic partner with Inglese would give the young defender more confidence, as well as having a good goalkeeper behind him too. Keep Swibel, Dovison and Cocks on for the first half so we can score 2-3 goals early on and kill off the cup match by halftime. After that you can manage the match with your U23 players and rest the senior players. Easier said than done.

Ive got a nagging suspicion we are going to rest ALOT of players tomorrow night.

Happy to take a 1-0 win tomorrow night in the Round 5 Dockerty Cup match.

Thing is - we are going to need to score a few goals against Melbourne City Youth on Friday night. Our goal difference in the month of May is about to get smashed.

Yeah I feel the same. I dont quite think we want to throw it (OFC is almost finished and we have an easy ish draw in Dockerty to survive until it is) but I reckon we will play the kids again with 3-4 super subs (if needed)

Friday is tricky because we dont know what players Melbourne City will use. We need our best team on the park. I think they had 3-4 from the youth on the bench for the A league last night and they will need to do the same next week as they play Auckland Saturday arvo.

Ideally the team that lost narrowly to Auckland will play tomorrow night, with Javi in goals.

If Melbourne City Youth field a weakened side, then that will help us immensely. Need a few goals there. May is going to get ugly in the NPL.

I dont even think we will start Javi, maybe on the bench... I think something like below for cup and what we saw on Friday for Lakeside against Melbourne City ... then same for Auckland (5 days recovery time is a luxury) what we do against Bergers is anyone's guess....

Charlston
O'Sullivan
Inglese
Angelatos
Skapoulas
Menealou
Papadimitriou
Cocks
Mesorouni
Dovison
Singh

Mate, 3 matches to worry about, Bergers away, Georgies and Avondale home.... Our U23s will double team Floparolli and Carpenter and nullify Avondale and Georgies are starting to slump its really only Bergers , who will go all out for points at home, that we have to worry about... The youngsters are gonna have to defend, defend, defend and we ALL need to get down and make sur they feel supported. Snag a point at the Village and we should build a statue for them.

I wish I could share your enthusiam.

We have a fighting chance against George Cross, but we cannot defeat Avondale and Heidelberg with our U23s team.

If we win the OFC Pro League, no one will care about the Avondale match. People will be interested in seeing the OFC trophy instead.

That being said, we have a massive and potentially lucrative 4 weeks ahead.
