Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Would be stupid if the points reset. If they dont we may be better off going all out in the next 3 games. Then we could potentially phone it in when we go to Auckland.

That said Auckland is where i'd expect us to produce our best football as the weather wont kill us.

How we deal with the weekend will depend on our result with Bula.

If we win midweek the team probably comes home for Oakleigh, if we lose we have to stay and scrap for the last 2 games.

Probably a thought that the team that played Auckland could/should beat PNG on Saturday. 2 wins makes the Tahiti game next Tuesday a dead rubber.

Todays draw has done us a massive favour. Ideally Auckland keeps beating the rest.

For the Oakleigh match, the rumours are circulating that we will be fielding a weakened side, probably similar to the one that faced Auckland. Assuming we beat Bula FC midweek, then we could afford to send back some of our first Starting XI players to try and get a draw against Oakleigh. There is also a consideration of cost involved, because these airfares would have been booked weeks in advance.

It would not surprise me if they focus on OFC Pro League, take out the next 3 matches and focus on St Albans in the following round of NPL Victoria fixtures.

The turnaround between the Tahiti game to St Albans is very short. Anyone that plays Tahiti is unlikely to play St Albans on the Friday night. I suspect the senior team will return after PNG match if we win the 2 games.

Where is our game being played tomorrow? The current Soloman kings v Vanuatu match is being played on a choppy cow paddock.

Our club will be focusing on the OFC once Phase 2 arrives.

That means our NPL team will be missing virtually our First Team for about 4/5 weeks.
The month of May is virtually a write off for the NPL Victoria competition.

The following are the NPL fixtures. They exclude the Round 6 Dockerty match if we progress against Bulleen.

Apart from the Melbourne City Youth and Hume City matches which will be played by our first Starting XI, the matches against Heidelberg, George Cross and Avondale will be played by our second string Starting XI.

Pretty sure the points carry over it doesn't reset. Same as what happens in Scotland if im correct. So if that is the case we'd just want to ensure we finish 3rd so we avoid the play-off match vs 4th. If that happens we'd get a week rest before the semi

If South defeats Bula FC, we move to 22 points. The best that the fifth team can achieve is 21 points. Then we are mathematically secure in the top 4.

On the assumption that South beats Bula FC and PNG Hekari, and draws against Tahiti United, then we would finish the regular season on 26 points. That guarantees second spot. Then in the Leaders Group finals matches, you field the strongest Starting XI in order to finish that series off strongly and be well placed for the semi finals.

What we need is clarification on whether the regular season points carry forward to the Leaders Group finals series. My assumption would be yes.
There is very little chance the points carry over .... IMO

The OFC Pro League website does not mention it

Below is the relevant section on the playoff phase from the Competition Rules document.

The first stage of the Competition.
This stage will be played in five rounds of circuit series, each consisting of eight Participating Clubs playing Matches against one another.

In total, the Circuit Series will constitute a double round robin across the whole Competition, with each Participating Club playing each other twice, so that each Participating Club will play a total of 14 Matches each in this stage.

Play Off Groups
The second stage of the Competition.

The Participating Clubs will be split into two separate groups - the Leaders Group A and Challengers Group B - based on points achieved for Matches played during the Circuit Series Round, with the highest scoring Participating Clubs being ranked.

The Play Off Groups will consist of each Participating Club playing one Match against the other Participating Clubs in its respective group (each Participating Club therefore playing 3 Matches in total in this stage). Points amassed in the Circuit Series Round will not carry over, with teams starting the Play Off Groups on zero points.

At the end of the Play Off Groups Round, the top three Participating Clubs in the Leaders Groupwill automatically qualify for the Semi Finals.

The fourth-placed team in the Leaders Group shall contest a single SemiFinal Play-Off Match with the first-place team in the Challengers Group to determine qualification for the Semi-Final.

Perhaps Poutakidis will take the Oakleigh match given a number of players (eg Menelaou, Leech, Cocks etc) would be flying back for the Oakleigh match.
Leech will definitely be flying back for our match against Oakleigh given that he's suspended for the game against Bula FC tomorrow and there's no point in him returning to Fiji afterwards due to the short turnaround.

Damn that means we have to send
our best team over next month. Which means we have to give 3 points to teams like Heidelberg locally grrrr.

We only have to drop points against Heidelberg United on the road if we're sending our best team over for OFC Pro League finals but we could get the job done and there's still the return leg at Lakeside Stadium in mid-August.

Depends when Phase 2 starts. Although it's highly unlikely that it starts a week after the Heidelberg match. It must surely be starting no later than around the date that we play Heidelberg.

The OFC has not released any dates for Phase 2.

The dates for the Leaders Group phase is 6th, 9th and 12th May.

We want to avoid finishing 4th as that would mean we have to go into the playoff against the winner of the Challenger Group.

If the dates are 6th, 9th and 12th of May our only guaranteed loss is against Heidelberg who we play on the 8th. Of all teams to have to lose to lol
