A-league attendances

No they don't. They play maximum two home games a year at the G.

If Melbourne city aren't interested in growing the game and having a full time presence in SE Melbourne, take the licence off them and give it to someone who will.

Them being in Melbourne has been a complete failure.

Article in The Age today about how AFL crowds are down due with costs being a key factor.

Cost of living crisis really starting to bite into Aussie sporting crowd numbers. Even if the the Iran war stops tomorrow the economic effects are going to be long term. If it keeps going, causing oil to stay high, it’s going to really become an issue for Aussie and NZ sporting crowds. People have been able to pay higher prices for a couple of decades. That is most likely about to change. Families in particularly are just not going to be able to afford what they used to. New pricing models need to be imagined.

Players salaries in multiple codes have become cross between a Ponzi scheme and a house of cards. TV deals in Europe have driven unrealistic expectations here in football.

It's quite simple. Cut your cloth to fit what you have. The only alternative is owners with bottomless pockets full of cash.

In a world full of craziness, football player salaries are the acid trip.

I've been reading up on Troyes, your CFG sister club in France....

There's one or two similar situations to Melbourne City.

They average around 5-6k per game in a 20K stadium in Ligue 2. They are 4 points clear at the top and are looking good for promotion into Ligue 1.

The fans have mixed feelings about the CFG ownership but seem to be coming around a bit after frustration among supporters regarding the management of the club, with fan protests taking place (including incidents of flares/smoke bombs at stadiums).

They've been a bit of a yo-yo club up and down between Ligue 1 and 2 over the last decade.....

It's going to be interesting to see if CFG invest in Troyes to make them a more stable club.

There's a very good academy at Troyes and they produce a lot of reasonably good players.

The A League certainly appears to have plateaued in terms of attendances. Ten years ago, I thought the plateau would come, but it would be at around 15k average, the way things were heading.
Certainly well short of that.
Between Gallop and Covid, and now some stunning incompetence from the APL, the comp has endured a hell of a lot of self inflicted wounds.
But it is what it is and I for one am enjoying the football. The elephant in the room is how much longer the owners are prepared to pour money into the comp, and to what extent?
My feeling is that until our clubs complete successfully in Asia, the comp will always be seen as substandard. In that regard the salary cap is both saviour financially and also a rotting albatross around the neck of the competition.
Or, to mix metaphors, we are between a rock and hard place.

To which I add that many issues would be resolved by impossible holy grail of appropriately sized grounds. If every club played out of a Hindmarsh, we would be having a different discussion.
And yes I know it will never happen, but I can't help wishing...
I don't watch Bulls or Roar home games any more. The endless empty seats are too depressing. It looks like no one cares, which actually is not far off the mark.
The advantage of not having a local team to support is that I can simply watch the games I am interested in.

Is there any correlation between what is spent on players/squad and attendances.

Of the top of my head, I believe the salary cap went down a couple of years ago, and in the same time the crowds have dropped considerably? There are not many x factor players in the league. Jaun Mata, Lolley and thats about it?

5-10 years ago I knew at the very least the starting 11 of each teams, these days would be lucky to name 3 players from each team.

You obviously don't watch a lot of world football, where in many a country the stands are mostly empty.

2 years tops! Unless there is some decent money coming in from TV deals I just don’t see how clubs will survive.
Football finances are weird

RIch people are surprisingly ok with spending ludicrous amounts of cash. Oxford united had a 32million aud annual deficit and thats pretty normal

Im not confident on any predictions. But i do think the a leagues claim to monopoly access to the top is surely looking shakier since it has already come at the cost of a divided community and less investment in youth (even today)

This thread shows you why Football is doomed in this country. The majority on here are death riding the competition, hoping it will die ASAP. I don't know another country where this constant negativity and death riding goes on.
People aren't flooding forums wishing the sport dies, or old teams are resurrected in their place.
you are all expecting an EPL type league, where all the top players flock to play. Even if you got it, you would then still roll out the excuses of why you don't show up. Too dear, too hot, wrong day, my fuckin in-laws are coming over, etc, etc, etc.

the division in this country is definitely a disadvantage, but i don't think it can be magicked away. I don't think supporters of former nsl clubs will be shamed into supporting the league (and nor should they). If that worked, it would have worked years ago

I agree we definitely need to support our clubs whether they are epl quality or not

to be honest i haven't seen a lot expecting an epl type league though? I'm enthusiastic about the youth coming through and wish roar would play a few more. My club's situation has been tough for a while off the field but loyally watch regardless
