Yep. Lyon are a stronger side though. The same Arsenal team didn’t beat Chelsea once that season. The Arsenal side that ended up winning UWCL last season had Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross though.

If he was so good I guess Lyon woulda kept him, right? Instead they got Jonatan Giráldez from Barcelona. Arsenal fans didn’t particularly like him at Arsenal either from what I gather.Seriously? He was at Lyon for one season, and lost only 2 games all season. Yes Lyon dominate it, but that does not diminish his reign. If anything, there would have been more pressure on him to perform in that season and win the title.
No doubt not many expected Arsenal to win the comp at the start, but they won it. To lose to the eventual champions is no laughing matter. One could argue that the 2nd leg was bad, but every coach will have losses like that.
Not sure why you are against him so much when his stats and credentials prove that he has earned the right to be the coach. If he fails, I will judge just as hard as anyone, but to be this harshly critical so shortly into his reign is something else.
Jonatan Giraldez was Washington Spirit head coach before making the move to OL Lyonnes but his track record is still good in terms of winning silverware there and leading them to an NWSL Championship game, in addition to the countless trophies from his previous tenure at Barcelona.Instead they got Jonatan Giráldez from Barcelona.
Love your articles, HSF, but I've hardly been on the forum lately. Bit busy off it.Again I know Matildas fever is dead for now, but I’d love to see more people over at Matildas Abroad. Annalise Rasmussen who I woulda picked for the Asian Cup was on the bench for Juventus.
Emily van Egmond will be easy to replace with more youthful options in midfield and Hayley Raso at 31 years of age is eventually going to call time on her international career given the injuries she's sustained over the years.I'm not sure if Kennedy, Catley, Kerr, Foord, Gorry, EVE, Raso ( how old is she?), are impossible to replace?
All good. I understand it’s not everyone’s thing but I still just wanna put it out there. Me and Reb Fem watch all the men’s and women’s club games so we’d love to grow the women’s space as well as the men’s.Love your articles, HSF, but I've hardly been on the forum lately. Bit busy off it.
I have never been a huge fan of EVE, but that successive coaches have kept finding roles for her, is testament to some more subtle things she must do well.Emily van Egmond will be easy to replace with more youthful options in midfield and Hayley Raso at 31 years of age is eventually going to call time on her international career given the injuries she's sustained over the years.
Those strengths of Emily van Egmond have indeed been delineated in this thread but to be fair she is starting to regress and read the game less well as tactics evolve though.I delineated them somewhere else in this thread - I think?
Absolutely love what both you and Reb Fem have done for the forum. Particularly for women's football. All good. I understand it’s not everyone’s thing but I still just wanna put it out there. I think Joe M has been a huge improvement on Tony G.Premature talk of replacing Montemurro. He set up the team well though Kerr was patently not fit to play 90 minutes. His substitutions could have been better.
Kerr will be hard to replace, the rest not so much.Very good game, but the Matildas weren't good enough.
Not sure if this this is a GG that will be difficult to replace? Other than Kerr and Foord being difficult to replace, other younger payers have improved over this tournament, or continued to develop.
I'm not sure if Kennedy, Catley, Kerr, Foord, Gorry, EVE, Raso ( how old is she?), are impossible to replace?
Kerr will be. Possibly Foord?
Torpey, Heatley, Fowler ( best I've seen her play), Carpenter, C-C, Wheeler, Hunt ( poor by her own standards), are all young enough, or have improved recently, to provide a nucleus of Matildas.
It will be hard for anyone to score the quality of the world class Kerr goals in 2 of the last 3 games though. Foord missed quite a few chances in the final too. Albeit some of her chances were difficult.
Japan are a classy team!
Emily Husband is a very astute coach and, in time, will learn a great deal from such an experienced tutor as Joe Montemurro is.I think Joe M has been a huge improvement on Tony G.
Like seeing women coaching women. I note Emily Husband is assistant Matildas coach.
Must admit I've been a male who has coached a lot of girls and adult women too. Most coaches agree, but females have a higher level of game sense than men, and are quicker on the uptake.
They don’t need a total rebuild but the technical management needs to be aware of the numerous untried players that have not yet had the chance to show what they can do.Kerr will be hard to replace, the rest not so much.
I agree, I think building squad depth should be a priority. They don’t need a total rebuild but the technical management needs to be aware of the numerous untried players that have not yet had the chance to show what they can do.
Agree that we should be building squad depth and bringing in youth to eventually replace the Matildas' golden generation when they eventually and inevitably retire as opposed to continuing to call up the old guard and shallowing the national pool over the course of multiple major tournament cycles.I agree, I think building squad depth should be a priority.
She’s been coached by her dad before which I’m sure helps lol.I have never been a huge fan of EVE, but that successive coaches have kept finding roles for her, is testament to some more subtle things she must do well.

Thank you!!Absolutely love what both you and Reb Fem have done for the forum. Particularly for women's football.
Both of you bring so much positive content.
You should have had a lot more thanks and appreciation than you've had to date.
You bring so much useful content and info to G and G. Your articles on Fan View are well written and well researched too.
Fair play to both of you!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
Lyon didn't keep him because he accepted the Matildas job.If he was so good I guess Lyon woulda kept him, right? Instead they got Jonatan Giráldez from Barcelona. Arsenal fans didn’t particularly like him at Arsenal either from what I gather.
I’ve already seen people unable to accept the fact that we made mistakes. Keeping an albeit fan favourite (likely elevated due to her career at Arsenal) in Caitlin Foord on when she wasn’t doing well was not good enough. Unfortunately I don’t think people are willing to accept that.
