Remember watching that France v Brazil match... was only a little'un but still remember the match to this day. just cinema.
I think I may go to my grave thinking it was the greatest Soccer match ever. I showed it to my non soccer friend, and he made the observation that there were VERY FEW throw in's. It flowed and flowed like a symphony

78 and 82 I was too young to appreciate what I was watching apart from goals and teams so 86 was my first "proper" world cup... we where in Greece at the time, so the visceral memories of all these great games and players is watching in tiny rooms, in a sweltering heatwave, no air con, cigarette smoke so thick you couldn't breathe and cross-legged on the marble floor watching and NOT wanting it to end...

agree re the France v Brazil was a rippa ! so were/was the '82 below watching it.
I was bit too young for the game of the century but the fam and relos were going off by the result......
  • Italy 4-3 West Germany (1970 Semi-final): Known as the "Game of the Century," featuring five goals in extra time.
  • Italy 3-2 Brazil (1982 Second Round): Paolo Rossi’s hat-trick knocked out a favorite Brazilian side in one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
  • West Germany 3-3 France (1982 Semi-final): A dramatic comeback by West Germany, winning 5-4 on penalties after being 3-1 down in extra time.
  • Argentina 2-2 England (1998 Round of 16): Famous for Michael Owen's wonder goal and David Beckham's red card.

Totally agree.

Anyone and everyone who has the slightest interest in football should watch this game.

And with Luiz Fernandez at his absolute best. It was the quintessential career defining performance...

WC Q-F and he was magnificence personified, poetry in motion.

The slide tackle on Careca is an iconic moment in French football history...

As was his celebration when he scored the winner in penalties!!

What an amazing football player!

Meanwhile, there were some truly terrible matches in the World Cup finals.

In 1998 I can remember getting up at 4 in the morning to watch Cameroon and Austria kicking large chunks out of each other. With referee not doing much about it.

I always get early world cup hype but then a lot of second group games start to fizzle out and I'm alright with not watching them with great focus. Was it the last Euros with many goalless draws?

Yeah AND in 2002.. I can think of particular match at the moment but I cant remeber a match that stood out to me from that cycle.

This is my piece for Le Foot on the enigmatically brilliant Frenchman Eric Cantona and one of the most controversial incidents in the history of the English Premier League.

From the sublime to the missed penalty, to a Carecas poem in front of the net and Socrates's headband.... cinema... pure cinema... made me love this stupid game...
That tournament started the long road to my love of soccer. Although that love has metamorphosed into only being interested in SM Hellas. to

The 1998 tournament exposed the ridiculousness in expanding the tournament from 24 to 32. Too many rubbish games.

But it’s ok. We now have 48 teams

My article on French football's African connection. I don't usually use lots of statistics but thought for this piece they'd paint the picture much better.
