He's right. It's not only the robotic aspect of the modern game but even the Champions League format change became boring after one year for me. I like the change but it eventually still feels like the same teams playing each other. That's fine but there's just a predictability about it despite Bodo and Galatasaray advancing.

Fantastic story. I do wonder though what the thinking was in France and West Germany just four years later when they again met in a World Cup semifinal (and France lost again).

I'd say that there would have been a bit of tension around the squad, in the training camp, in the dressing room before the kick-off.

Although there were no record of any incidents taking place with the German.players.

The bigger story might have been that this was the end of France's 1980's 'golden generation'. They had won the Euro's in 1984 and were highly fancied to win the World Cup in Mexico.

The midfield was revolutionary and one of the finest ever seen in the history of football....

Michel Platini, Jean Tigana, Alain Giresse and Luiz Fernandez. A wonderful midfield quartet. Le Carré Magique ("magic square") as they were known in France at the time.

France with pretty much a whole new group of players didn't qualify for the Euro's in 1988 nor the World Cup in Italy in 1990. And their Euro's in 1992 was hugely disappointing going out at the group stage....

Yes France in 1986 had a very good team and were playing well, especially in knocking out Italy and Brazil prior to the semi-final.

Would they have beaten Argentina in the final?

I'm not so sure....

I mean Germany went toe to toe with Argentina but Germany weren't what you might call a beautiful football side. They were pragmatic and tenacious and could have stayed with anyone in the world.

France, with Platini orchestrating and the wonderful ball players Giresse and Tigana running around behind, certainly were a beautiful football team and I think Argentina, who were similar to Germany, pragmatic, defensively solid yet tactically innovative. A mixture of European discipline and South American flair. I do think Argentina would have overrun the French.....

Looks like they were all after the final whistle 90+6 minutes... What I want to know is who was left on the field to present the cup and medals to? They should have all been in the sheds... hahahahahahaha
