The Wanderers have such a toxic culture that a committee of world cup winning coaches couldn't do much for them.

Look at Mata, he's ripping shit up and playing great football now.

Every season we look at the WSW squad and say "they'll be a top 6 contender this season". Then they are rubbish. They never seem to have a poor squad, but they inevitably get poor results. Even right now, on paper there is plenty of quality in that squad. Like you said, I don't think it's the coach, something else is broken at that club.

I do think it is a problem that there is now a long history of appointing unsuitable coaches. Since Popa, I don't think there has been one coach, from my perspective, who should have been given the job. Which says a lot about the quality, or lack thereof, in the managment of the club. So much potential and yet such a basket case.

It's possible they keep hiring the wrong coach, but it's also possible that there are bigger underlying problems.
Looking back, Carl Robison did really well at the Jets and then poorly at WSW. Gombau was good in Adelaide and poor at WSW. Rudan actually did better at WSW than WU, but you got the feeling it should have been better with the squad he had at the time.
Apart from Popa, there are no coaches that have lasted more than two seasons.
Interestingly, from a points-per-game perspective, Staj is the best they've ever had.

I think Rudan did his best work with Wellington. The Phoenix improved under him.
 
Staj wasn't just the coach, he was Director of Football too, had total control of the football department. He was like a kid in a lolly shop that had found $20 on the footpath. Buying the wrong players, in my opinion, and too many of them, then trying to stuff them all into the team

Man, Staj is a low bar! Yeah, good points on Robinson and Gombau. Particulary Gombau. My recollection is that club simply wouldn't back him.

Personally, I think the only way forward is to hire a coach from overseas, outside the closed recycling shop of the A League. Give him complete authority and 2 years to rebuild the squad, and a third to play it out, regardless of results.

We BADLY need some fresh coaching blood in the comp, some new ideas.

Rudan does his best work when under a limited budget, He knows how to find decent youth (Like Talay) and get the best out of them and what he has to work with. That didn't happen at WU and to some extent WSW but his WSW side was plagued by injury's and lack of decent youth coming up through there system also lets not forget the VAR/Ref decisions not going there way at crucial times.
