2026 Women's Asian Cup squad

Good players and they have potential, but I don't see a lot of them making the cut.
I've based the list on form this season in A-League Women in addition to major tournament experience and previous international experience, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on who to cull because I'm not sure which players end up making the final 26-player list.

From that squad?

Alana Murphy probably needs to prove herself a bit more first. If you're going for a younger squad then maybe Mini goes? Shelby McMahon is quite impressive and I do rate her though she is only 17.

Overall though that would certainly be a great basis for an U23 Asian Cup squad (minus obviously the over-23s). I kinda wish the Olympics were under-23s like in the men's so the schedule was less full-on plus then we get to see under-23 talent in an international window.

Alana Murphy already has tournament experience having played in the SheBelieves Cup and Katrina Gorry has leadership qualities, in addition to having been part of the Matildas squad for the past two major tournament cycles, and I want a mixture of experience and youth because it'll be detrimental for us if we go into the Women's Asian Cup with a completely inexperienced side, but at the same time if we have the oldest squad in the comp then that would also be problematic.

My squad so far (ordered by position and surname), assuming the expansion to 26 players is approved:
  • GK: Arnold, Micah, Whyman
  • DF: Carpenter, Catley, Grant, Heatley, Hunt, Nash, Nevin, Rankin, Rule
  • MF: Chidiac, Cooney-Cross, Galić, Sayer, Wheeler
  • FW: Foord, Fowler, Johnson, Kerr, McNamara, Raso, Sayer, Siemsen, Torpey, Vine
One to be omitted due to Mary Fowler's ACL; if she's fit then she'll stay and someone else will go, if she isn't then she'll be omitted.

The transfer window will be key. Game time is key.

Any thoughts?
My squad is the same as this but:
  • Added Katrina Gorry and Annalise Rasmussen
  • Dropped Kahli Johnson and Kaitlyn Torpey (both moved to reserves)
  • Switched Jada Whyman with Courtney Newbon as an injury replacement
The "reserves" are a list of the five next players in line.

I've written a FanView article which'll drop tomorrow.

Yeah that's why I decided to not include Emily Gielni, Alanna Kennedy, Aivi Luik, Emily van Egmond, even though this could be the former one and latter three's last possible tournament (Lani will probably last a few more years but is probably done with the Tillies).

Any thoughts on who else makes the final 26-player squad for the Matildas ahead of the list being announced? Currently Mary Fowler is the only player locked in to the list, and it's very unlikely that Alexia Apostolakis will be named after being given a Young Matildas callup for their upcoming domestic training camp.
I HOPE Daniela Galić. But I’ve hoped that for ages and she’s only got five caps.

I also hope Annalise Rasmussen. She’s an absolute baller.

I think Daniela Galic is a shout to make the final list as a differential option in attacking midfield, and Annalise Rasmussen will also likely make the squad and be given a senior Matildas debut following her remarkable form for Central Coast Mariners despite not getting game time since being transferred.

Alanna Kennedy, Alex Chidiac, Amy Sayer, Caitlin Foord, Charlize Rule, Clare Hunt, Clare Wheeler, Courtney Nevin, Ellie Carpenter (vc), Emily Van Egmond, Hayley Raso, Holly McNamara, Jada Whyman, Jamilla Rankin, Kahli Johnson, Kaitlyn Torpey, Katrina Gorry, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Mackenzie Arnold, Mary Fowler, Michelle Heyman, Remy Siemsen, Sam Kerr (c), Steph Catley (vc), Teagan Micah, Winonah Heatley

The final 26-player list for the Matildas hasn't been announced yet so some of the squad will be subject to change, but even still I don't think Alanna Kennedy or Emily van Egmond should be making the playing list if we ideally want to be going all the way.

Matildas have named the final 26-player list for the Women's Asian Cup. Sam Kerr leads the line as captain in her fifth Women's Asian Cup, with Steph Catley and Ellie Carpenter named vice-captains. Eight players make their tournament debuts, including Winonah Heatley, Clare Hunt, Kahli Johnson and Charlize Rule, along with Mary Fowler finally making her long-awaited return from an ACL injury to the squad.

Great squad and would be even better if we switched Michelle Heyman and Emily van Egmond for Daniela Galić and Annalise Rasmussen. Is EvE only in A. so she can break the cap record set by Clare Polkinghorne (Polks shoulda also been let go earlier) and B. because she plays in the WSL (albeit for the worst team)?

Gutted for Charli Grant who’s out because of injury. How she got injured despite (wrongfully) barely playing is insane and I think it shows that while we’ve certainly improved as a team and with our signings, Spurs still haven’t fixed the medical department. She was supposed to be back at Christmas and now will miss the Asian Cup.

The squad is alright but if that is the best 26-player list for the Matildas then it shows serious problems with the selection policy given that we're picking the same old players and still turning to Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond, even though both are clearly past their prime and starting to regress.

I agree with the above and would add that the mention of 8 players making their Asian Cup squad debuts isn't really a big number given the age of the side. Progress will come if the 14 players in the 0–40 cap bracket can be meaningful contributors, and a number of the ageing vets provide support.

I can't believe some of the old guard are still in the squad really time to move them on I reckon
After this tournament I expect we’ll move on from a couple players like we did at the World Cup. Michelle Heyman, Emily van Egmond and Tameka Yallop (not in the squad) should be moved on. Katrina Gorry could last till the World Cup.

They better not start Em for every game just so she can break the cap record (she’s four caps off). Maybe the first two group stage games (the Philippines and Iran) since the teams are crap but not against South Korea (though I suspect we would beat them anyway) and definitely not in the knockout stage.

After the Paris 2024 Olympics debacle we really should have moved on from the old guard instead of keeping them in Matildas squads, and keeping the same old players including the likes of Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond for the Women's Asian Cup only serves to reiterate that the Tillies selection policy is flawed.
