This current 25/26 season:

Slovenia Prva Liga (Koper) - 6 goals (2 of them penalties) in 5 games.

Poland Ekstraklasa (Wisla Plock) - 1 goal in 6 games.

I really don't get why Segecic hasn't been selected. He should have been given the minutes Hrustic was given.

I feel like Popovic was being a hard arse on dual nationals around the time the Triantis stuff kicked off and it played against him. Earn your stripes type attitude.

Fwiw I don't think not having coached him has anything to do with it. Reckon Popovic gets a bum wrap on that based on perception and not much else.

It's harder to know exactly what he likes to see for a player to be picked in a squad. But Popa's team selection reasons are known. He has expectations for them coming into camp and while they are in camp around fitness, application, off the pitch things etc. Some guys get it straight away, like Italiano, others take a little longer like Balard. Popa has said this, past players have said this, current guys have said it.

This approach has been true for Popa right from the WSW days. The advantage players who have played for him have is they know the standards and can more easily meet expectations. Unfamiliar guys need to adjust which can be hard in small windows of time offered in international windows. This is why guys like Teague or Vilupillay can come in, meet the expectations, and be given the opportunity straight away while other guys take time to adjust.

Fans work backwards. They start with a dislike of Popa, so are looking for some kind of malicious reason they can attribute to him as to why their guy doesn't get picked. Ego, dual national stuff, pride, having lost the them in the past etc. The mundane reason of him just liking someone else is too boring and doesn't satisfy the attachment fans have to their guys.

I hope Segecic is picked and plays at the world cup. He can definitely find a goal.
