Valkanis aside:
"With Suncorp Stadium set to host three more concerts in the next few weeks before the surface is being completely replaced, the Roar’s next four games are away from home, starting with next Sunday’s clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium."
Last time I recall them doing this the pitch was loose turf under foot for weeks. Slabs of turf moved when players tried to push off hard.
On Valkanis:
I have not bought in to every game being a physical battle, or "playing a simplistic style of football" outright.
To play with commitment and determination, and to play good 'simplistic' passing football, I am totally happy.
To play simplistic in terms of get a goal then boot it long and hack your opponents I don't agree with.
So far I am seeing the determination and commitment part in spades, but I am not seeing much beyond good tough physical play. Other people's comments suggest we are playing like it is a warzone and we encourage physicality that crosses the line. Maybe that is just my orange glasses - I don't see us playing like hacks and butchers...?
The thing that bothers me is the increasing time wasted and booted long ball aspect over the positive possession/control football that we have also played up to now. I am worried that we might lose sight of football if we focus too much on the battle.
To apply an old adage once again - when you are up to your armpits in mud and crocs it is hard to remember that you are there to drain the swamp.
