A-League Women/Matildas transfers and delistings

Stats are one thing, performance is much more important but, absolutely, she should be pushing herself at a much higher level.
I guess we all have a favourite player but the most important thing is to get our talented players performing at a much higher level than the ALW.

Should I do an article on leagues and/or countries that are good and compare them with the men's game? There's a big gap between say Scandinavia in the women's and men's but also a big gap for more socially conservative developing countries the other way around.

Also, should I do an article on the downfall of the NWSL from an Aussie perspective? It used to be quite a good place for Aussies to go. But now, other than our two goalkeepers playing in the US (Morgan Aquino and Mackenzie Arnold, both with the initials "MA") none in either the NWSL (except Macca) or USL (Morgan) have stood out as being very good and have lacked game time. However, only one (Kaitlyn Torpey) is leaving their club (Torps hasn't decided where she's going yet but she's leaving Portland Thorns and I think she'll be leaving the US).

I don’t think there is any point whatsoever in comparing women’s and men’s leagues.
I think the NWSL has developed to a much higher level than our players are capable of performing in.
It is becoming comparable to the English WSL.

I don't think it's that at all. The NWSL actually used to be better than the WSL, but it's now the other way around. Soccer being ingrained as a women's sport in the American college system (traditionally men who played soccer in the US would be immigrants, i.e Latino, Italian, Spanish, etc) helped transform America into a women's soccer powerhouse.

However, as the women's game became more mainstream in the late 2010s and especially in the 2020s and onwards, European money has caught up. The WSL and other European leagues have actually overtaken the NWSL. The NWSL is still strong and probably always will be, but it's now behind Europe.

If we have multiple Aussies at some of the best clubs in the world, then they certainly would make it into NWSL teams. But the Aussies that have gone to the NWSL just haven't clicked. Maybe it's poor recruitment, a preference for Europe, or even just not wanting to live in the US?

I think I should write an article on this. Stay tuned, I'll draft it but it won't be published (or worked on) on Christmas Day.

I think one reason why European leagues are now starting to surpass the NWSL is because the NWSL still has a salary cap whereas the European leagues don't, although they are introducing a high impact player rule to try and retain top talent which will come into effect from July 1st next year.
 
When do we think the first Aussie transfers will happen? We still have three free agents.

I think we should see some Matildas players get transfers agreed at the start of the January transfer window, but player movement in A-League Women is more or less quiet during the Christmas period and last couple of days before deadline day.

The transfer window is now open in Denmark, France and Germany, while it opens tomorrow in England, Italy, Portugal and Spain. It opens in four days time in the Netherlands and in five days time in Belgium. While the Baltic-Nordic window (observed by the Baltic states plus Scandinavia minus Denmark) opens at the end of the month, many players have already been released and as always free agents may sign for any club outside the transfer window.

Many transfers have already been agreed prior to the transfer window opening, but none involving Matildas players yet and all the transfers won't be official until the transfer window is open proper.

Speaking of that, Tottenham have already signed three players: Signe Gaupset from Brann, Hanna Wijk from Häcken (yesterday) and Matilda Nildén (Amanda's sister) also from Häcken (today).

Great signings from us, but sadly that means Charli Grant (whose contract expires in June) might leave since Hanna Wijk is a full-back. Charli's unfortunately and very unjustly lacked game time this season (although she was injured before Christmas), so unless maybe Ash Neville retires I think Charli will leave.

Clare Hunt is a starter at Spurs and has been solid under Martin Ho's new system so I think she'll extend her contract unless we sign more centre-backs. No way she goes back to PSG though with the shitshow they're in. I doubt it will be the end of Aussies at Spurs if she does leave though, we're far too important a market to ditch.
 
It was reported by BBC Sport three days ago that English right back Ash Neville was in talks to sign for Leicester. While we haven't had any updates since, it gives hope to Charli Grant as it makes it more likely for her to stay unless another full back signs. With the injuries we get it's not physically possible to only have three full-backs.

Currently including Hanna Wijk we have five full backs but one is Ella Morris who is injured. Amanda Nildén plays left back, Ash Neville and Ella Morris play right back, while Charli Grant can play either. Hanna Wijk is a right back but can also play as a right defensive midfielder.

Amy Sayer has made the move to Malmo FF, where she'll be teammates with Courtney Nevin, after being previously delisted by Kristianstads. She'll be under contract for the next two seasons through Damallsvenskan season 2028 and becomes the first Matildas player to move clubs in the January transfer window.

Amazing signing, will also be able to linkup with Matildas teammate Courtney Nevin and Aussie dual international Vesna Milivojević who plays for Serbia.
 
Charli Grant now virtually certain to stay at Tottenham with Ash Neville leaving.
 


Remy Siemsen has made the move to FC Rosengard after being delisted by Kristianstads ahead of Damallsvenskan season 2026, where she's already been assigned the number 10 jersey.

I think Remy Siemsen will no doubt find herself in the FC Rosengard starting XI come Damallsvenskan season 2026 opening day, especially since she's been brought in to bolster a playing list that's been decimated by departures of key players during the offseason.
 


Anna Margraf has been delisted by Carl Zeiss Jena after the club mutually agreed with her to terminate her contract early. She'll return to Australia as a free agent and subsequently becomes clubless midway through Frauen-Bundesliga season 2025-26.

Rosengard are in an interesting spot. In 2024 they were champions putting up Barcelona numbers. Season just gone they were lucky to avoid relegation. Think this should pan out well for Remy if she doesn't go another 12 months without a goal.

Yeah they lost all their players and just didn't replace them then had what was their worst ever season. Now they still haven't got those players back so I think their future is pretty grim, but they'll probably stay up for now until more Allsvenskan clubs (e.g. IF Elfsborg, GAIS Gothenburg, IFK Göteborg, Mjällby AIF, etc) invest in their women's teams and then the Damallsvenskan will look similar to the Herrallsvenskan.
