A-League Women/Matildas transfers and delistings

https://www.newcastleunited.com/en/news/tanya-oxtoby-appointed-newcastle-united-women-manager

Former Young Matildas and Perth Glory women's assistant coach Tanya Oxtoby has been appointed Newcastle United women's head coach for the next four seasons through season 2028-29, which comes after she spent just over two years at the helm of the Northern Ireland women's national team.
I saw a rumour of this! She's got a big task ahead of her, Newcastle will be wanting promotion and nothing less in the next few seasons. She does WSL commentary too (amazing to hear an Aussie voice commentating in England, wonder if Mark Schwarzer would consider doing the same).

https://www.thorns.com/news/portland-thorns-announce-end-of-season-roster-updates-2025

Kaitlyn Torpey has been delisted by Portland Thorns as part of their end of season roster updates for NWSL season 2025, meaning that she's now without a club and becomes a free agent going into season 2026.
I doubt she’ll stay in the US. Only two Aussies are left in the NWSL which is less than all of the Big Six leagues except Liga F (zero) and equal with the Première Ligue. The Bundesliga, Damallsvenskan, Serie A and of course the WSL all have more now. In fact more Aussies play for Arsenal (three) and the same amount play for Chelsea, Sassuolo and Tottenham as the entire NWSL.

any rumours of any fringe tillies, who’s seasons have wound up, or are currently clubless, returning to the a-league in january?

also, another thing i’ve been thinking about recently is… when do we think we’ll start to see the more senior girls return to the a-league?

i know it’s obviously not in their best interest financially… but i’d love to see sammy, caitlin, raso etc, come back for the last couple of seasons of their careers

would be a huge boost for the league

All the Matildas abroad at Arsenal (Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross) fall out of contract at season's end, as do Sam Kerr at Chelsea and Charli Grant at Spurs so I think we could see some of the more senior Tillies players return to the A-League Women in the next couple of years unless they extend.

I doubt that will ever happen.

I think what's more likely to happen is Matildas players currently in the A-League Women will pursue moves overseas instead of it being the other way round because it's more lucrative for them to be going to fully professional comps rather than continuing to play in a semi-professional one where financial uncertainty is unfortunately commonplace.

I don’t think the NWSL is a likely destination for our women anymore, the USL is a possibility, that’s where Morgan Aquino is playing, but the standard is only slightly higher than the ALW.
In the short term we need all Matildas players to be playing a longer season but even that isn’t much use if they are sitting on the bench.
Of course, what really needs to happen is that the ALW gets up to a professional level.

This is absolutely correct. As you mentioned about players out of contract, Holly McNamara's contract also expires at the end of the season. She would absolutely be wanted in Europe.

I will reserve my judgement on whether Holly McNamara would be ‘absolutely wanted in Europe’ . There are a number of talented players in the ALW who need the opportunity to prove themselves at a higher level.

The USL Super League is probably the same as if not lower than the ALW (our top teams are probably better than theirs but their bottom teams are probably better than ours). Sure it's professional but the Dub is actually quite good ranking-wise. The fact that officials rightfully say the Dub needs to increase its quality shows that we have even more potential.

Should I do an article on leagues and/or countries that are good and compare them with the men's game? There's a big gap between say Scandinavia in the women's and men's but also a big gap for more socially conservative developing countries the other way around.

Also, should I do an article on the downfall of the NWSL from an Aussie perspective? It used to be quite a good place for Aussies to go. But now, other than our two goalkeepers playing in the US (Morgan Aquino and Mackenzie Arnold, both with the initials "MA") none in either the NWSL (except Macca) or USL (Morgan) have stood out as being very good and have lacked game time. However, only one (Kaitlyn Torpey) is leaving their club (Torps hasn't decided where she's going yet but she's leaving Portland Thorns and I think she'll be leaving the US).

I feel like with her stats a lot of clubs in Europe would love to have her especially if she has a good Asian Cup. Given she only extended till the end of this season I think her plan is to go overseas. Even if she just starts slow and goes to a top team in Denmark, Holland or Norway, or a midtable team in a Big Six league then that's a start (Wini Heatley went to Nordsjælland for a few years, became captain and now plays for Roma).
