FIFA 2026 WC - general

It is funny that it's Iran and Egypt though.

Maybe funny in the sense that it's going to be yet another case of the 'Global South' being told what they should and shouldn't be doing by the 'Liberal West'....

And I'm not too sure if the 'Global South' is listening to the 'Liberal West' anymore, to be honest. The West has often assumed a subjectivity in determining the meaning and standards of global cultural exchange. In doing so, they have frequently been perceived as patronising, coercive and domineering. The cold sobering reality is we're living in a multi-polar world, both politically and culturally and no FIFA World Cup tournament with its quasi-political gimmicks or no quasi-political gimmicks will fix that....

Still funny.

Sorry I need a bit of clarification here, are the homophobic middle eastern countries NOT the champions of the Left anymore? Or have they been replaced by FIFA and the United States as the woke du jour?

Look - I don't care how people live their lives. But FIFA and the IOC are both guilty of being 'political'. Their job is to organise sporting competitions not cater to political egos of any persuasion. I know it is naive to think that would happen because it has rarely happened in my lifetime and before.

It's too deeply ingrained now....

Back to 1934 Mussolini World Cup, 1936 Hitler Olympics, 1938 French anti-fascists protests.

Australia not immune - 1956 Blood in the water. 2000 corruption allegations, Howard vs Costello stance on reconciliation.

So yeah - goes back close to a century

I do like to watch the World Cup and a fair bit of the Olympics but I'll admit they're not something that I'll get super excited about, at least in terms of the perpetuated politio-hyperbol that invariably gets lumped in with the actual sporting side.

Reactions: LFC
Egypt FA posts 'we refuse to support events for homosexuality'. To say this is cultural difference is utter nonsense. It's an archaic way of thinking. Again it's a stupid clash across many religions. The church wouldn't support it either.

Sure this subject has nothing to do with the world cup yet everyone was told Qatar's culture must be respected over there. People complied and drank in designated areas.

I think if you polled you'd find an overwhelming majority would like to live in the liberal west rather than places rules with an iron fist. The issue now is too many people from the latter have moved to the west and don't know what to do with all that freedom and the liberal West has opened itself to abuse because of it.

Saw someone say the other day 'we're in Germany. I don't care about what your culture is or does where you come from. To expect the locals to jump through hoops for your archaic ways isn't going to happen.'

If we replaced Germany with India, Saudi Arabia or Thailand people would probably think fair enough.

They will find an alternative. I.e. Move the game to Vancouver and move a Vancouver game to Seattle. Teams happy, Seattle happy and FIFA avoids the issue.

The US, particularly the MLS, want this World Cup to be a huge success. I can see it as a complete football and PR nightmare. First football - they play Paraguay first. This is a team that beat Argentina and Brazil in qualifying. Sure USA beat them in a friendly (where managers trial players and tactics) but realistically the CONCACAF teams are not match hardened from qualifying like the Europeans, South Americans or the AFC. Only 3 real standouts mean their qualifying is a doddle and their ranking is probably inflated. So assume they lose or get a point on the first day.

Does the press turn?

Then they place us. Almost certainly it is a low scoring match with any result possible. If Australia win or draw then the US is either on 0 to 2.

Does the pressure hurt them now, they can't afford to lose the last game against a probable Turkey and a draw could be problematic for a third placegetter. After the hype from the draw the pressure has flipped to 11.

Non- football. Unfriendly locals that hate foreigners, entry problems and high ticket prices that only allow event goers lead to a poor atmosphere and empty seats.

The MLS that wanted this event to turbocharge the sport suddenly learn that they are still not a footballing nation.

At least they have ambition our suits are happy to host the women's world cup and get nothing from it

I suspect there is plenty going on behind the scenes.

Confirmed or Successful Bids

AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026:
Australia successfully bid for and was awarded hosting rights in 2023. This will be the 20th edition of the tournament, serving as a stepping stone for further women's football events. The bid was part of a broader strategy to capitalize on the 2023 Women's World Cup legacy.

AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup 2027:
Football Australia confirmed its bid on July 12, 2025. This marks Australia's first time bidding to host this youth tournament since joining the AFC in 2006. The event emphasizes youth development and aligns with AFC's push for gender equity in Asian football.

Planned Bids

FIFA Club World Cup 2029
: Australia (potentially in a joint bid with New Zealand) has expressed strong interest and is preparing a formal bid. The tournament's expanded 32-team format (starting in 2025) makes it a high-profile target, with Australia & NZ’s existing venues catering easily for the event.

AFC Asian Cup 2031: Australia has shown interest but has not submitted an official bid as of late November 2025. Current confirmed bidders include Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan/Uzbekistan (joint) and Kuwait. Other nations like India, South Korea, and Indonesia have also expressed interest without formal submissions. The AFC bidding process is ongoing, with a decision expected in 2026.

Potential Future Opportunities:
Discussions around confederation reforms pushed by Japan (e.g., a new East Asia-Pacific group including Australia) could position the country favorably for a 2038 FIFA World Cup bid, potentially with New Zealand and Indonesia. This would also be the first ‘South Pacific bid’ and push back against the Northern bias that CAF and south America commonly complain about.

This East-Asia Confederation would be basically the AFC minus the WAFF sub-federation and the Central Asian Football Federation. It includes 4 of the top 5 most populous nations on earth and more than 50% of the World's population
