FIFA 2026 WC - general

Had a discussion yesterday that a gun violence event will be inevitable. Maybe pre plotted but also drunk football fans with a remark to some hood gangster and then they start firing.

Was asked where games are in Detroit or Chicago as Democrat cities would be safer. I laughed.

Regular service from Boston to Foxborough is just over an hour but I see there's a match special train so it'll cut travel time. Boston have hit the jackpot with 2 Scotland games.

I recall NY having some law forbidding the building of new hotels a couple of years ago so that'll add pressure. At the same time many NJ places have accommodation or you could even go as far as New Haven and travel in for the day.

I haven't looked at booking yet but I imagine some astronomical prices.

Would anyone sleep in Oakland for the San Francisco game?

I'd imagine a cheaper option and quite accessible.

To get from Oakland to the Chase Center in San Francisco within two hours of game times, the most efficient options are the San Francisco Bay Ferry service (approx. 40 minutes total, including walking) and the BART to Muni transit combination (approx. 35-55 minutes total), or a taxi/rideshare (approx. 16-20 minutes, traffic dependent).
Transportation Options
Mode of Transport
Ferry & Walk ~40 minutes (25 min on ferry, 15 min walk) Direct event service available from Oakland to Pier 48
BART & Muni ~35–55 minutes Take BART from an Oakland station (e.g., 12th St/Oakland City Center) to Powell Street Station, then transfer to the Muni S Shuttle or T Third Street line which stops at the UCSF/Chase Center platform. Your game ticket acts as your all-day Muni fare.
Drive/Taxi/Rideshare ~16–20 minutes (without heavy traffic) This is the fastest option by distance but is highly subject to heavy game-day traffic and limited/expensive parking (pre-paid passes often required). Rideshare drop-off zones are on Terry Francois Blvd.

A historic FIFA World Cup match-up awaits 🌍🏆

Tunisia vs Japan will be the 1,000th match in the tournament's long and storied history.

That's terrifying

Nah. I went to South Africa and all they crapped on about for months before was how it was a crime riddled shithole and everybody was going to die. They said the same thing about Russia.

Went to both and didn't have a problem. They have so many police on the street and so much security there'll be no issues.

A 2026 World Cup fixture designated by organisers as an LGBTQ+ 'Pride Match' will feature two countries where homosexuality is illegal.

The local organising committee in Seattle, one of the host cities for the Fifa tournament next summer, have said the match at the city's Lumen Field on 26 June will feature celebrations of the LGBTQ+ community.

The plans were put in place before the teams involved in the fixture were selected or the draw for the 2026 World Cup was made.

And following Friday's draw and Saturday's fixture allocation, it has been confirmed that the game on 26 June in Seattle will be the Group G match between Egypt and Iran.

In Iran, the maximum punishment for homosexual relations is the death penalty, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently used to suppress LGBTQ+ rights and relationships.

FFS FIFA, give it a rest with all this quasi-political, etc stuff. Just go back to running the game and corruption rackets as in the past.

FIFA have now announced 3 minute drink breaks (regardless of temperature) during every half of every game at the world cup. Obviously just to allow ad breaks, effectively playing quarters now...

Which broadcasters will actually show ad breaks? A lot of games are on public broadcasters where ads won't be shown. A temperature threshold should apply but then there'll be complaints that that's unfair. More has come up on player welfare so they're reacting to it.

It is the local Seattle organising committee who have organised this, not FIFA if I read the article correctly.FIFA should tell them it is totally inappropriate considering the two teams that are playing( I know it was organised prior to the draw) and get rid of this " ultrawoke" bullshit.

While it shouldn't be happening to begin with, it's highly ironic the two teams drawn will be amongst it and their broadcasters will be in overdrive to censor it. Backwards places.

Remember that silly Qatar catch 22? Confederations wanted to LGBT protest with armbands and then FIFA said no and Qatar was of course against it. Germany got made to look fools with their politician wearing one in the stands and everyone else was there for the football.

While it is the local organising committee that has arranged it, it wouldn’t have been done without FIFA’s imprimatur.

There surely had to be FIFA consultation as we know they're really strict on any tagging on to the event.

The Egyptian Football Association said in its letter to FIFA that the Pride Match events “directly conflict with the cultural, religious and social values in the region, particularly in Arab and Islamic societies,” and would “provoke cultural and religious sensitives” of Iranian and Egyptian fans.

Mehdi Taj, the head of Iran’s Football Association, said on state television Tuesday that Iran had also protested the Pride Match designation with FIFA. Iranian news media reported that the country’s team players would not wear rainbow arm bands or display any support for Pride.

I think that the authorities should take the cultural sensitivities of these two considerably football mad nations into consideration. This will be a massive game terms of in Middle Eastern football family.

The way the football authorities are going about promoting more LGBTQi initiatives doesn’t at all bother me, but you don't need a PhD in international cultural studies to see that not everyone in the world celebrates these kind of things to the full extent that the organisations would like.

A sensible way would be to allow these countries whose societies are two deeply conservative in their cultural and social practices and pick another game for the Pride match.

It is funny that it's Iran and Egypt though.
