imagine a Japan V a complacent Brazil upset in R32 and a Uruguay vs Argentina after extra time also in R32. Meanwhile we beat Iran in revenge for 1997.

Next round Uruguay in a replay of 2005.
 
H2H tiebreaks just make it even tougher that with two first losses your most likely out. Narrow losses are that much harsher.
 
It's true the USA could have gotten a tougher draw and they're on a form rise now. It seems everyone wanted Australia from pot 2. They'll estimate our ability correctly but not our beatability. With H2H tiebreakers Popovic probably just wants to avoid defeat.
 
Kosovo have an excellent squad on paper and a lot have done well in European leagues. They have a good chance. Beating Slovakia secures a home playoff if the wiki is accurate. Their team has a lot of foreign born players with the respective football upbringing so it's not truly reflective of Kosovan development.

The worst by far is Morocco. French and Belgien academy products so it's basically representative of that and not the country's football system.
 
The Socceroos are in an interesting group, it's going to be very tough. The USA is not a bad side, and Paraguay is a tough South American team. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see the Socceroos getting out of this group.

didn't see them getting our of their group in qatar either. Footballs a funny sport and we do get better results than paper would suggest

Assuming the Socceroos win group D which is unlikely and England come second in group L then the earliest we could meet them is in a quarterfinal in Inglewood on July 10th should both teams make it that far.
 
It's easy to view any group we get allocated with a pessimistic outlook, and I'm guilty of that too. Every country has done well to qualify and you can make a strong case for why they are a formidable opponent. I would say though that if we're being completely objective, this is the easiest group we've ever had at a World Cup, and it's not even close. I'm not saying I'm confident that we'll qualify for the next stage, though I've never said that. By any rational measure though, this is our easiest group. I'd suspect most of us would have snatched this option in a second if it were offered to us. It's past 10pm and I've been up since 4am! What a day. Good night all!

Yeah. I think it's shit but Nic did an AI probe and it appears there's merit for it given the vast gap in teams. In saying that Spain beat Costa Rica 7:0 last time but I'm not sure we'll see so many blowouts this time.

I have to keep reminding myself Tunisia are better than last time so their group is bloody good. Netherlands Japan probably Poland and Tunisia.

North African teams don't get the credit they sometimes deserve but they also don't deliver. Egypt 2018 were garbage and I know Salah was absent but they just did nothing.
 
I just hate H2H so much as you get this immunity from a dodgy late penalty. We've seen it enough in Asian youth tournaments where the teams just pass the ball around as draw prevents their other H2H scenarios from counting.

Of course if you win it's awesome. I really hope some big nations lose early then the fans see the reality that they may not jump that minnow. I look forward to the incompetent journalists who don't know its H2H and write all the permutations with GD and the numerous online commentators who have no idea.
