The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Watch out in the Shouts.

The team listed first is not always the home team if that is a factor of your tipping.

For example, CANBERRA CROATIA are listed first but they are not the home team.

;)

Looks a similar crowd to last week at Marconi, maybe slightly bigger. Pretty confident again bigger crowds are possible, that one last week v south Hobart wouldn’t have even been the biggest of the season

Start this at 5.30 and its an automatic extra thousand at least. Said it a million times but 1pm is crazy this time of year, Sydney had a 39 degree day a few days ago, the championship needs to follow a summer schedule.

Yikes. What a back-breaking sequence of play for the Wolves, and just before half-time. They realistically had the momentum before that penalty.

A clear advertisement for VAR - the Wolves player reaching up and grabbing and squeezing the Marconi's privates in an old school mongrel act.

Assistant ref directly behind reasonably saw nothing. Ref saw no specific act amongst all the bodies and movement - fair enough. Clear and obvious red card for assault but both players get a yellow for the general tussle.

Really bad miss.

For the penalty at the end of the half, what was the actual cause of the penalty? If a player puts/slides their body between an attacker and the ball in a way that the ball is within their control range it is a good intercession and the attacker is most likely to commit a foul by making contact with them.

Is it the fact that the defender dived over the ball?

Calling it a handball is dodgy to me because it was his supporting arm that might have come into contact with the ball - and I did not think that was considered handball these days.

Two very difficult moments to officiate without the benefit of VAR and replays. You have to be f*cked in the head to choose to be a ref - and good on you f*cked in the head refs!

100% if they did this people would complain it's on at the same time as the a-league.

I can see what they are doing - trying to give it its own air.

1pm kick off sucks, but you can understand the thinking

Why are Melbourne people so against 1.00pm kick offs ? I am all for it, sets the day/night up perfectly.

Two extraordinary goal mouth flurries by an attacking Marconi and no goal in either.

Several blocked shots in the first round with a keeper out of the picture and a single player blocking the first two shots at close range before another player blocked the third.

A headed ball onto the crossbar, with the same player then driving the rebounding ball onto the side post and bodies blocking a third attempt.

Incredible luck and desperation from Wolves both times.

I think Wolves actually played the better system of football but just didn't have the skill level to pull it off. Really well constructed attacks and ball movement with poor execution of passes giving it away all game.

Marconi deserving winners - they just had the better quality across the park.

I think that's us done. I thought we were the better team last night. Just couldn't bury our chances.

Still good to see the ground pumping.
Next week do or die definitely need 3 points a lot of us from Rockdale will be going

All they have to do is avoid same city clashes. Last Sunday 3 championship games went head to head with mariners v jets.

A league fans would be fuming with 1pm games imo. We should be saturating the evening timeslots, an A league game on in Sydney during primetime, chuck a melbourne championship team on at the same time, doesnt affect crowds at all.

I'll argue that Sydney United were the better team overall. They just stopped playing football for the first 20 minutes of the second half and let MetroStars back in.

Agree

I can see the logic behind the 1pm and 3.15pm kick offs as it provides SBS a window to show matches on their main channel and does not conflict with A League fixtures.

For instance, a 1pm kickoff for a home South match would be disastrous as the crowd would be tiny.

I think you can schedule matches later in the day in cities where you don’t clash against a same state A League team.

The Australian Championship is there to complement the A League. We are not in competition with them.

I truly believe you can foster a League Cup competition between A League and Australian Championship teams to promote both competitions and grow further interest in the code.
