Green & Gold FC podcast

That's amazing you got the author of that book. It's sold 250,000 copies worldwide. That was a great interview.

Great interview.

At around 13 mins he seems to not agree with a government imprimatur similar to the French. I take issue with. The PM is using Rugby Union with Fiji, Rugby League with PNG and Football with Indonesia. AFL has traditionally been used by AusTrade where other nations have no interest and is an obvious waste of resources. Investing in football is probably the best use of resources both locally and as a Foreign Affairs and Trade tool as it is a truly a global sport that can be used everywhere, even if at the edges you use other sports.

It makes sense - today I saw some post about some AFL match involving Croatia that some government department representative was at

indeed some massive ones coming up!

Stefan saying the only country that got past the middle income trap was France through government investment made me think of the shut down of the AIS (and the AIs had some similarities with Clairfontaine!)

not sure how much it was in our control, maybe the government funding cut was irreversible and out of our hands. Interesting that the article claims there were only 2 sides - closing it in 2017 and closing it in 2019

Yeah - I'd say the government funding cut was out of our hands - AIS sports funding is generally based on historical medal hauls and prospects, so having not qualified since 2008 on the mens side would have made that decision for us.

But it definitely closed in 2017 - that was the last year they played in the NPL here

I remember on the TWG Forum back in the day, someone started a thread titled “Cricket is a big sport - it’s even played in Croatia” and below was a pic of the supposed 🇭🇷🏏 NT, even though they all looked like Reject Shop-variants of Simon Katich..

Brad Hogg played for Croatia in T20 i believe.

That is the problem. Government funding on sport should be on a hell of a lot more.

First of all there is the use of sport as a vehicle to maintain a healthy population. Football as such a large participation sport should be encouraged by much greater funding just because better performances will encourage more and more to participate and help slow the obesity epidemic. The other govt funding that should be beefed up is that controlled by DFAT. Giving a shitty Sherrin to a football loving PM or President just shows how naive we can be.

Yes, by all metrics of my understanding from a federal standpoint, only Rugby Union and Football should be getting federal funding.

I’d be cool w/swimming and athletics getting it too if they don’t already; basically any sport that is by definition truly ‘global’ should get it(in which case Union either barely does or doesn’t qualify)

Long story short, AFL shouldn’t even get a fvcking cent💡

Yes, bingo

Essentially it's all based around how Australia performs at an Olympic level - so definitely no AFL.
