Was the nationality ban on Aussie clubs necessary to build our future?

I agree they have to go full circle to appreciate the value and entitlement of these clubs - but to include both the traditional/community clubs and the new plastic clubs is a step further than they have ever gone before.

The Australia Cup thriving is proving that the concept of mixed competition has appeal and passion.

The Championship has a chance to re-engage the traditional and community clubs on a big stage.

It comes back to the original question posed - despite the pain and ignorance of 20 years 'outside', are we now approaching a point we could not have gotten to without that segregation?

I seem to remember there was a bit of questionable manoeuvring around the Newcastle United / Jets - maybe the screwing over of Adamstown Rosebuds??.
 
huge question there RIMB that in hindsight some may say yes others on the other hand not.
Why did the so few NSL clubs ie Jets/Bris/PG/AU get the ticket to ride the new plastic proposal whereas others not ?
Each of those cities had ample community clubs of choice.
Did MV getting the green light close any chance SMH being approached ? probably yep.
Lets not forget Mr Lowy had a chip on his shoulder towards the ol FFA and I'm sure axes to grind with many of his fellow NSL Presidents/comittee's he would have clashed heads with - hence he throwing the dummy out of the pram in the first place withdrawing Hakoah from the NSL.

I sure do agree we/the NSL was in a mess, they were battling amongst themselves and the Governance was strangelholded by SAG - < pjennings agree ?

Our game was always on the outer and ostricised by the majority of the pop and the media.
Nothing like the world we became moving forward since 06.

Maybe yes time has helped something but what ?
Is it because the new dawn plastic game has been floundering for some 5+ seasons ?
Its lack of penetration ? lack of funding ? lack of competition ? meaning the closed league is proving its not gaining the growth the boards and spread sheets forecast ?????

Yep, for 5 years at the very least, no other "consortium" was allowed to hold an Aleague license in Melbourne as per Victory's initial license agreement with Lowy ... still not entirely sure they ever paid for the million dollar buy in at the time either btw.... does anyone have confirmation?

As for Hakoah, the actual social club withdrew their financial support and Lowy had to sulk off and humble himself in front of the wogs he hated and withdraw from the NSL... They didnt vote for him as president and then he had to withdraw that must have stung hard..... revenge was 100% the motivation behind Sydney FC and the Aleague.... ... he tried but we are ALL still here....

Very much this.... if WU hadn't folded and Aleague expansion was actualy still a viable idea, the APL would be making ALOT more noise about killing off "da effniks" now it seems, ironically, they seem to think they may need them just to stay alive a little longer....

All I remember about the Jets formation as Newcastle United was they were formed out of the ashes of the old Newcastle Breakers.

Not too dissimilar to how Adelaide United was formed after the late Bob D'Ottavi pulled Adelaide City out of the old NSL weeks before the last ever season.

We were Football NSW's bid at the time, Lowy only got involved as he wanted the club to play the old SFS instead of Parramatta Stadium.

Worked out well for me in the end being from the southern part of town.

I know the club's history mate.

It was all to do with FNSW wanting the club to be based out of the old Parra Stadium and the FFA wanting it to be based out of the SFS.

Again worked out for me being based in the south at the time.

Good thing it did get based at the SFS as I wouldn't have supported any club based in the west.

I remember SBS's then chief football reporter Andrew Orsatti questioned Frank Lowy about his Sydney FC ownership at a press conference once and the conflict of interest.

An uneasy Lowy replied to Orsatti...

"Hey? You wanna take my share?? You gotta a cuppla million bucks???"

Then Orsatti asked if Sydney FC was a rebrand of Sydney Hakoah

Lowy replied No!!!!

Orsatti put his head down....

Fair call about the trad clubs. I was watching abit of the the Canberra Croatia match recently, was that Ustasi signage in the outfield again?
A section of Croats cant help themselves. Look, this is why Conroy and also the APL will have to really think long about whether some of these clubs can participate going forward. They cannot represent football at any significant level here.
There are other sporting codes here that are being backed alot more because of these 'effnic' reasons from years ago and will continue to be the case going forward.

Its up to the clubs to represent themselves and their communities NOT the whole sport in my opinion. IF the Cro club fans can't help themselves that will be to their own detriment...

That is how it should be - but it isn't.

Instead of saying "a bunch of Croatian identifying idiots did something" it will be "soccer is bad" all over again.

Nothing we can do about it, and at the same time it reinforces the perception of the need for additional policing.

We are our own worst enemy.

I disagree.

We all jump up and down when the narrative is "soccer hooligans at it again" but these same buttercups get all reddit fury over the word "Croatian" (in this instance, but willing to through any migrant group under the bus to fuel their xenophobic reaction tbh) ...

Why can't it just be "a bunch of flogs did something" for BOTH instances? Why bring ethnicity into it?
