Summer of Cricket thread

After losing the top four for 45 these kids were never going to give India much to chase, but led again by Alex Lee-Young, who top scored in both innings, they battled hard, leaving the Indians with a paultry 82 to win.

Early wickets were needed and the boys have two but at 4/5 runs an over, far too many to be giving them for even the remotest chance of victory. These kids need to learn how to sacrifice pace in order to build pressure with good line/length in these clutch situations of a match.

If Khawaja and Starc have a poor Ashes they should be tapped. Lyon should call it quits, has had a good run. Australias luckiest cricketer.
I'd hardly call Lyon, Australia's luckiest cricketer in fairness.

He only needs 1 wicket to equal McGrath's record then he only has the late great Shane Warne in front of him for Australia's leading wicket takers.

Will tell you why I say that. The guy fell on his feet as at the time there was a scarcity of r/a finger spinners in first class cricket and as Lyon just happened to know a bit about bowling off spin having played some cricket while working as a a curator at Adelaide Oval think it was, he impressed selectors who wanted a r/a finger spinner for an upcoming tour of India. What better place for a spinners first tour abroad than the sub continent. He took wickets so was on his way. Had it been say, an England tour like two yrs later we may not be saying, the rest is history and praising his excellent record.
You remember Ashley Mallet and Bruce Yardley both r/a finger spinners, well I did my sums a while ago and Mallets Test stats were better and Yardleys similar to Lyons from the same number of matches, bout 35 from memory. Had either of them had the same long careers as Lyon, they too would be nearing or have already passed McGraths record.

Sorry Rich but there is no way a single spinner in this country would have taken 562 test wickets if they were chosen instead of Lyon. It just wouldn't have happened and the numbers would speak to that likelihood.

For me Lyon can be frustrating because he seems to have been bowling virtually the same ball his whole career and in the aftermath of the great Shane Warne he is hardly a wizard or entertainer.

All that aside he has taken wickets all over the world and I believe has been integral to maintaining pressure for the quicks to attack relentlessly at the other end.

No one can say that with any great certainty odw. Fact Lyono has taken 562 is not only due to his perseverance and determination to improve his art but his longevity has also played a major part. He has played 139 matches over almost 15 yrs. That is a lot of cricket. Yes he has played in all countries but not always successfully, as you'd expect he has done best at home and on the sub continent , other than Pakistan. Here are his career stats.

Me too, excruciatingly frustrating. You'd yawn repeatedly waiting for him to strike a blow and unlike Warne he was never going to run rampant thru a batting lineup. I recall times thru his career he'd have none for plenty then finally take one which led to more .That tells me he lacked confidence in his ability. He took a fair portion of his 268 Aussie wickets at home on last day after struggling for much of the game, curtesy of Starcs follow thru footmarks. In fact he still does.

He will be in a wheel chair by that time. ;) Call it quits after the Ashes Lyno, you have a had a good run now time for someone else to have theirs.

We can never be certain but you'd have to admit incredibly unlikely. I've never loved Lyon either but credit where credit is due. His record overall will stand the test of time.

And even the great SK Warne's numbers were very average in India...and the West Indies I believe.

Needless one dayer on today. But this is one I did not mind watching as the Tigers got home in a thriller. Didnt think I'd ever use that word again for this format. And they did it without their and in my view Australias premier white ball bowler, Nathan Ellis. Leading the run chase was Tim Ward with a ton, Jewell and Silk.

Marnus 'loosebuschange', as some wags like to call him, is bursting back to form too after his shield 160 and a ton today, just in time to take on the Poms. Shades of 2019 Ashes.

It will. He has managed this by having plenty of mental strength and resilience to own his spot . Additionally, being able to stay relatively injury free has allowed him to stay on the field and not give someone else a crack . Also helps the confidence having three long time mates as your fellow bowlers...

I think Clare Hunt's brother Henry should be a shout to get a callup sooner or later given his form in Sheffield Shield, especially after posting 126 and 33 in South Australia's four-wicket loss to Victoria recently.
Been saying the same for last five yrs but Henry had poor 22 to 24 seasons to put the kibosh on that. He bounced back last season and at one stage had three tons from five matches. Now he has started 25/26 with another maximum. So surely he is now in the Test conversation. Another is Tim Ward who also had a super 24/25 and has had a more consistent career than Henry, tho he is a greater century maker than Tim.

I've just been told by a Tas Crick mate we've won 3 One Dayers in a row! We have a home fixture next Monday. Will attend live.

Shield starts at Bellerive on Wed. Thankfully, we have some warmer weather coming. Will attend in members every day.
