Media bias against Australian football

The AFL are way more anxious while rugby league has strengthened and looks more sustainable. They did invent women's sport after all.
Yonks ago I did some research for a client.

Regional NSW, QLD n the ACT have almost the same population as WA, SA, TAS, NT n regional VIC. Meaning league especially when you 13 million people in Oceania has a far wider reach than AFL.

AFL have a greater percentage of its population base follow it than the NRL in its heart land areas

This actually makes the AFL at risk if they ever have a drop in support in there Heartland areas

Good article but South Africa wasn't really touched on.

Even 30 years since the end of apartheid, sport in South Africa is still largely seen along racial lines.

It's changed a little but not too much.

The demographic-gamechanger there would be an Afrikaner equivalent of Van Nistelrooy or Van Persie(let alone Cruyff) coming through 🇿🇦‘s ⚽️ing ranks, you’d reckon. Rather like here w/how if Irankunda were either a skip or First Nations, the mainstream would make a MUCH bigger deal of him than they do..💡

The way South Africa is it makes news over there if a black player gets selected for the Springboks or the Proteas.

Football is already the country's most popular sport but mainly because it's the main game of the black population.

That's bullshit! Football has always ignored Aboriginals in the game except a minimal few. I even remember at school wanting to play soccer only for all the ethnics to tell me to go play rugby. Even being a %100 Aussie you will always find it hard to get into a club unless you have half the alphabet or Vich in your last name. Also Football has priced it self out of cheaps sports for kids to play, AFL is only a few bucks where as soccer is over $1000 a year or more.

I must admit I used to get annoyed a little that the 'mainstream sports media' were anti-football, so I came up with a solution....

I ignore the 'mainstream sports media'...

With these smart tv's and all these apps I've never had so many tv, radio channels and digital audio content available to me. I just find something that isn't anti-football.

I think the podcast is covering the whole history of the Oz media's hostility towards ⚽

I read somewhere that when Ch9 were showing the first 3 of the 9:30 KO Saturday night Premier League games in August, right after the Rugby League the Ch9 RL crew had a full on spack attack against the channel's top brass because they couldn't have their post game analysis...

They even show a replay of the previous weeks Premier League on Saturday/Sunday at 12:00pm, right in time for lunch.

Point being & what everyone needs to understand is that if they don't broadcast the sport they ignore it or shit all over it. It's business not personal.

I miss the old days 7:00pm on SBS....

Toyota World Sports - 10-15 minutes of football news and then the rest. Great stuff!

Unless its Channel 7 at the turn of the century.

A guy I know who is right into watching the Brisbane Roar and spends the rest of the year watching Wynumn Wolves up the road from me, in the Queensland NPL and has his two boys playing junior football, told me once when he was working at Brisbane City Council, in their plumbing and drainage services department was pretty much ostracised by his work colleagues for admitting he loved 'soccer'....

He reckoned they weren't bogan types either, they were engineers and surveyors...reasonably sensible and well-educated.

This fella isn't an ethnic, although he is a second generation pommy and it was his dad who got him into football. Where he works now as a maintenance supervisor in a food processing facility which is like the United Nations in terms of it's employees nobody bats an eye-lid if he mentions football.

Not just the mainstream sports media that hate on football....

I must admit I have had the occasional light hearted piss taking for following the "soccer" but never been given the nasty's at all!!

It'd be a safe bet the bloke's colleagues are boomers.

I've never had an issue in my workplace being a football fan and most know I am.

Same, even the Rugby boys say nothing derogatory about football to me. Maybe it's because i am older than them, then again, maybe not.
