Always very interesting how sealing wins can mean going off script and doing whatever. Those late, 3?, moments in space where we may have crossed it or run away to score show how open the match became.Very curious how to watch the replay.
Thought that, if u ignore the textbook and what it means to dominate games and look at the game through the eyes of poppaball the first 85 minutes was the most comfortable game since china. We had a lot of clear chances and they only had 1
Then the last 5 minutes we nearly collapsed l
Welcome to the forum Tony. We were lucky to get out of the first half without conceding a goal, as Rowles & Italiano were getting cooked at left & right wingback. We were a lot better when Bos & Miller came on. Disappointed that Devlin didn't get on the pitchMaybe because we won all the four games you're referring to. It's how Poppa won the Asian club Championship with WSW. Like him or hate him, Popovic took over after a home loss to Bahrain and an away draw with Indonesia, rescued our WC campaign and qualified us directly for the first time in ages. His record is 8W 3D 0L. So 11 games undefeated, including competitive H & A WC qualifiers against our bogey teams JAP and KSA. OK it's not Angeball (I would love it if we had the talent to play Angeball successfully, but we don't) but there is method in the madness. He plays to our strengths: defence. We don't have the players to dominate possession and territory. But the strategy works - the opposition - (Saudi away, Japan at home, Canada away) run up against a brick wall in the first half. At some point in the 2nd half when the opposition are tiring and frustrated, and the game is becoming stretched, with spaces opening up, he brings on fresh legs and lets our attackers have more free rein. So I wasn't dismayed by the 1st half, cos I knew what was coming, and we beat Canada away. Sure there's luck involved too but pluck brings luck. It'll be interesting to see if the US coach comes up with a srategy to counter Poppa's approach.
I also think this was the change that altered the course of the game.Welcome to the forum Tony. Come WC it'll be Irvine.Still not sold out Circati as captain. Comes across as too timid. We can't hear or feel his presence on the pitch like the players but it's too early. He certainly roamed forward a few times lead by example. Next cycle.
Don't like keepers as captains either. Irvine will probably take it back.
I just watched this post match interview and a British jurno said Australia has tall poppy syndrome when it comes to football? WTF is that supposed to mean? Is that a dig or a complement?

Really? I don't get that vibe at all, he is a massive talker for the boys...Still not sold out Circati as captain. Comes across as too timid. We can't hear or feel his presence on the pitch like the players but it's too early. He certainly roamed forward a few times lead by example. Next cycle.

I'm getting really sick of hearing how great Izzo was and quoting xG. He was good with one great save. I don't like xG myself but it was quoted in the game that the Socceroos xG was greater than Canada's just before the 1 on 1. So he made a great save and was a poor distributor when we needed an outlet when Rowles and Italiano were on. Before he made the one great save he did only what was expected. This is what the stats don't tell you. Circati should have scored on at least had a shot on target, Boyle and Irankunda both should have had unopposed shots on goal but the crosses were poor, one by Bos and I think one by Irankunda. Could easily have been 4-0.
If Bos does not start we cannot afford Izzo to be keeper. With no outlet he doesn't provide an alternate. Once again he showed that he was a good shotstopper but realistically the only ones that he was not favoured to save are the 1 v 1 when they got past Miller and the one that ricocheted around the box and he had no ideas about - but somehow it hit his hand.
He's certainly capable but I'm not sure throwing the arm band to him at this stage is right. Besides, Irvine and Ryan will return and have it. Post world cup is a good shout.Really? I don't get that vibe at all, he is a massive talker for the boys...
The best benefit for Izzo was exposure at international level. The saves were all rudimentary stuff we'd expect of our keepers. The point blank one is part luck part suitable anticipation but those ones are never rightly calculated as it all happens so quickly.I'm getting really sick of hearing how great Izzo was and quoting xG.
