U20 WC 2025 Australia match thread

Watching the game from 1997, hoofball seems incorrect. Barely a long ball in the game

we did retreat to our half 90% of the time we lost the ball rather than press whereas argentina pressed high. However, we worked through the thirds in possession

When i look at hunger i look at effort areas

If players arent scoring i usually think its a different mental issie - maybe being overawed. Not qualifying for ages is very likely a factor
I don't think "not qualifying for ages" is a factor. Players now are not encouraged to take the responsibility to be out-and-out goalscorers. A natural goalscorer has to be a bit selfish and coaches don't like that.

Lads, what do we need against Cuba tomorrow to reach the next stage?
I'll have to have another look to confirm, but this was as of before the 2nd group game for the final 2 groups:

A quick glance the opportunities to advance are diminishing. 3 spots left as one team has 4 points. We'll need a decent margin win and hope quite a few group games go our way preventing teams getting 4 points or superior GD. We may mathematically already be on the cusp of elimination with the last group games guaranteeing points for at least one of the teams.

Ok so, looks like we need to win AND score 3 goals.
  • GROUP A - Egypt on 3pts and -2 GD
    • A 1-0 victory over Cuba sees us on 3pts and -3 GD. Crucially, we are on the same goals conceded at the moment. So this is where the 3 goals comes into play (2-0 win would tie us up on goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded, so would see it go down to Yellow/Red Cards)
  • GROUP B - South Korea on 4pts and 0 GD
    • Cannot be overtaken by us
  • GROUP C - Brazil currently on 1pt and -1 GD
    • Brazil play 4th placed Spain (1pt and -2 GD) on the final matchday. Provided we beat Cuba, a draw in this match confirms elimination for 3rd place of Group C, regardless of who it is. A result in this match means the winner will qualify in either 2nd or 3rd, depending on
    • Mexico's last game (currently 2nd on 2pts and0 GD). A draw for them against Morocco (6pts, +3 GD) means they may also qualify regardless, given it would take us defeating Cuba by 5 goals to overtake them.
  • GROUP D = Our group. We need to win. Pretty much that's all we can do.
  • GROUP E - South Africa currently on 3pts and +4 GD
    • This group is going to be tough to jump ahead of, due to the fact it's New Caledonia's, and this means that all the other teams have a pretty high goal difference. Luckily, Seth Efrica has already played New Caledonia, so we'd need for USA to defeat them quite heavily (or the highly unlikely New Caledonia defeat of France) to have a hope of overtaking this group
  • GROUP F - Nigeria currently on 3pts and 0 GD
    • Nigeria play 2nd placed Norway (4pts +1 GD) who would be aiming for top spot over Colombia (same points and GD).
    • Colombia play Saudi Arabia (4th place, 0 pts and -2 GD) who are already eliminated as they cannot jump Nigeria in the standings.

The late start to the A League hasn’t helped us. We looked much sharper in the Asian Cup in February when most of these boys were playing.

The Young Socceroos starting XI for our last under-20 World Cup group game against Cuba has been named.

Great shot by Agosti and great save.

Pearman hits the post from long range

2:0 Australia at half time. Got to keep scoring to give themselves a chance. Here's hoping USA batter South Africa to dent their GD.

Amiss of me to not be following our Junior Socceroos but not too late as I am presently watching our boys take it to Cuba. 3-0 as I type. I know we went down to Argentina, so are we still in the tournament or done and dusted even if we win this on. The Aussies with some positive enterprise and pin point finishing are now dominating.
