Agree.

There's a reason they stopped doing golden goal. Extra time turned into a borefest with both teams not wanting to concede.

Shootouts are fine. Great drama and great TV.

They should trial tweaking the penalty order so that matches it with the tiebreaks in tennis. (I think I read 60% of the teams that take the first pen win.)

AGREED - shootouts show who's got their head together under extreme circumstances, a renowed taker like Salah skies it to the moon, its riverting viewing and the highs and lows it presents is brilliant to me, never ever change it forget golden or silver goose alternatives.

As for the suggestion of tweaking the pen taker orders - come on lets not look to keep tweaking our simple game - leave these decisions to the manager and its also a decision by a player who wish's to put his hand up for there is always some that will never step up the plate and fair enough.

I'm a bit on the fence with the order taking change. I can see merits for it, but I also think don't fix what ain't broke in regards to extra time and penalties in general. I think the only changes I would sort of accept are the ABBA order taking, and the return of Silver Goal

No fence sitting mate - people need to stop looking at changing our game that has served brilliantly to this day.
No nothing re ET then pens plain and simple.
The 1 only change IF anything make it 10min halves.

What needs to be weeded out is the many other minor but time consuming/game flow halts.
Play acting, pulling of shirts, arms rapted around attackers in corners, cheating many years by the thrower and above all VAR needs to be stream lined and those ridiculous rulings of a thumb or your nose classified as offside.

Clean up these things the game will flow and more action than delays once players learn they can't get away with the cheats.
By the way - should a player be given a yellow taking off his shirt after scoring ? :)
I really can't see a prob regards it actually as long as it doesn't delay re start longer than it should.

I remember seeing shootouts with mixed order and I wonder if the science can show there are certain advantages? I guess it depends when one misses in a sequence how it can then quickly boil over. I guess if A misses first and B takes a 2:0 lead, A still can make it 1:2 with their second kick, just in reverse. They can then equalise quickly being next up.

Just once, why don't we have one team take ALL 5 pens then the next team their 5 :D

We just need a massive culture shift that players know they won't get away with wasting time or faking things. Handball and rugby are great with their fairness. Football refs need to be like those refs. Decisions are final and any dissent is penalised. I don't think this takes the passion out of the game. The majority of tackles where a player goes screaming to ground are not fouls and we need refs to wave things on. The players get back up easily enough.

I no longer watch AFL - though I never did to any great extent. But when flooding came in and it looked like a bunch of 8 year olds all moving together around the field it lost me completely. Before that though the rules would always be interpreted differently depending on who was playing. The big thing in the rugby codes is the encroaching in defence, that also gets interpreted differently depending who is playing and where they are playing.

A shootout on either end at the same time - one of the catalysts of this discussion - does sound interesting enough for a laugh though. One side run by the Ref and fourth official - the other by the two AR's.

Rules regarding where a keep goes need to be followed. The crap Martinez does...Should be like discuss where you must exit the circle at the rear and a goalkeeper must stay in the 6 yard box pre penalty. No touching the ball.

In this split shootout situation, keeper stays in the 6 yard box at all times I would say. No need for them to go out of it

Or the player can shoot any time after the ref blows whether the keeper is ready and in their box or not.

Keeper handles the ball between shots and they have to be touching one of the goal posts when the kick is taken.

Or - there's just no warnings and it's a send off, with the goalkeeper to be replaced by an outfield player already taking part in the shootout. That can be just in normal penalties too.

Someone once had another idea on here. Something like the penalty taker be chosen a certain way.

My penalty shootout opinion is unpopular yet thanks to the many who have contributed to a civil discourse instead of telling everyone to go fuck themselves or juvenile threats to beat the shit out of each other. Makes a difference to the usual internet palavah.

I'd like to think we can have a bit of fun here with some wild ideas for how certain aspects of the game can be played.

Israel don't take issue facing Iran in sport. Iran meanwhile... Any nation that refuses or is deemed to be unable to face another in sport should simply be suspended.

A lot of crao affects UEFA draws. Central America play each other despite certain histories.
There's a difference between histories, and a country currently being active in a carrying out a genocide.
