Soccer Ashes thread

I thought Metcalfe had his best game I have seen him play for the Socceroos.A left sided combination of Bos and Metcalfe looks very good.Miller and Irankunda on the right side has a similar feel.Where does this leave players such as Goodwin,Boyle,Tilio,Hrustic,Velupillay and dare I say it Arzani?
Metcalfe can play on both flanks. He could also be a good Right WB.

We have quite a lot of depth ATM. As Kye Rowles said, Popa has a lot of selection headaches ATM.

For Deep Defensive Blocks, known as Partial Pressing, players like Hrustic and Arzani are ideal to break them down. It is when teams play Full Pressing and intensive Squeezing, like most of the last 4- 5 Roo games, where they aren't as well suited.

On my mainstream media hobby horse.

The ABC TV didn't even cover the first game in Aus.

Then in Auckland they gave a few secs at the end of the bulletin, not even showing Iran's superb goal!

ATM I've heard almost as much about England winning 5-0 against somebody, as Aus playing NZ.

And of course endless coverage about Ange and Notts Forest.

Maybe a podcast would be good getting Michael Lynch on, and others, and discuss why mainstream football media has declined in Aus?
Nah of my mates knew the match was on or the story of the ashes

The second game had highlights on ABC news

It did, but our ABC coverage omitted Irankunda’s goal.

I’m sure in the past any Socceroo game was a bigger event than it is now.

On a recent G and G Podcast, Michael Lynch, the former Age football journo, referred to how many ops there used to be for football in Aus media.

Sadly 'our ABC' tends to be Melbourne centric and is only interested in AFL and women's sport. I expect you would have seen more on the ABC if it had been a matilda's game.

Even the Sydney ABC is very AFL friendly though it gives NRL a big push as well.Women's sport gets lots of time which is good as the women's football codes have only had much media attention over the last decade or so,though female cricket has had lots of attention for years when international opposition was pitifully weak

I'll have a crack out that based on my opinion.

Depth: Goodwin, Boyle
Out: Velupillay, Tilio, Hrustic, Arzani

You could swap Boyle for Velupillay or Milanovic easy enough too.

It means we should actually have an ability to bring on dangerous subs, or shock horror, make a formation/tactical change if needed.

It's a good problem. Club form and injuries into the world cup will be massive shaping the final squad.
Milanovic please

I think you might be correct.

Welcome to the forum, Spectator.

Interesting?

I've nearly finished compiling all the stats from the first Ashes game in Canberra.

Id have to say the current Kiwi team is a worthy opponent. I can't remember them ever having a passing game like they currently do. Also, for a nation without a professional football league, which is rare globally, they are doing very well.

I remember going to games in the 80s which were not televised (thank god) and we were beaten by travelling club sides (like FC Gothenberg... I think) and the crowd was about 5k despite numerous free tickets.

I saw one bloke grab a handful at the gate then go and scalp them to rubes.

Great days for Socceroos fans, but yes... I have paid my dues.

True!

I should have said Socceroo games between 2005 and 2016/8.

It was thought the game would take up big media space by other Aus codes outside football - if - the Socceroos continued to qualify for WCs.

A lot of those games against club sides weren't really Australian National team games. They were an exhibition match for people to see club sides (mainly from Europe) and the Australian sides were sometimes quite strong, but sometimes not much more than a makeup side with who was available. Often the Australian side in Sydney was mostly NSW based players and the ones in Melbourne full of Victorian based players. I'm glad we don't do that anymore. I've paid my dues attending lots of those matches over the years as well. Can't remember my first time watching a club side but I remember watching us play a side labelled England FA XI in 1971 and my first world cup qualifier in 1973 against South Korea. I also remember being cranky with my dad for sneaking off to watch the Israel game with my uncle in 1969 without taking me and my cousin.

Pathetic from Poppa not to play Segecic in either game. Not putting him in matchday squad for this match is 100% about him making a statement. If he questions his allegiance as well it is completely on Poppa. So unnecessary to pit ourselves in this position. What an absolute moron bringing on guys like Boyle and Hrustic for a run again in a friendly and meanwhile one of our most in-form young players (and a dual national) doesn't see a minute. Regardless of results under his tenure, I've never disliked a Socceroos manager more.
Surprise surprise. #PopaOut
