The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Your 100% right... I don't think SBS is paying anything for the rights to this but showing all matches on FTA is an absolute dynamite move.... AND helps the Aleague as the match times don't clash, if anything, it can act as a lead in towards a FTA Super Soccer Saturday... It takes away the "stigma" of Aleague fans feeling like this is some sort of rival league to theirs and may even get a few (from both sides) to cross over and watch other matches.

Everything is in place for this to be a decent offering, just need the fans to behave themselves, come out in numbers and for this all to go smoothly.
This is the first time I think you've actually agreed with me haha

You could almost attempt a 24 hour TV football marathon here....

Start 1pm AEST Saturday....

2 Australian Championship games, 2 A League games, midday, afternoon and evening EPL games, evening Serie A and then the late evening La Liga game finishing around 11 am Sunday AEST.....

With the u20 world cup, the championship, aussies abroad and the a league I'm going to have to plan some nice things for my poor wife

Excellent news that the games are on free to air especially SBS, getting mainstream exposure is a very important start for this league to be a success.
I have no doubt it will be a success. The Championship will become what should have been the restart of domestic football in 2005.
The question will be how does the A League fit in to this new format for Australian football. Hopefully we can recover some of the ground lost over the last 20 years.

The ideal world would both leagues would intertwine then we would have two pro leagues with pro-rel 🙌🏻😆

Maybe SBS , the only bidders. What I hear is there is not a lot of money involved.
Maybe? I dont think SBS offered any money to be honest, just the cost of production and advertising (but could be wrong, just making an assumption).

I was always curious to see what direction FA would take with this comp once it got up and running... I always felt that IF they saw a future in the Championship and Aleague merging to form some sort of 2 tier pro/rel stand alone thing then it would have been a no brainier to combine the broadcasting.... The fact that they (at least in my opinion) seem to have prioritised initial market reach over financial gains seems to indicate that they are more interested in "growing the brand" first rather than the sugar hit of a financial payday from the get go...

SBS has a lot to gain and very little to spend on.... Nostalgia for all things 90s and 2000s (inluding football) is globally all the rage at the moment, perhaps they are also banking on these sentiments... From conversations Ive had with others outside the NPL/Aleague divide bubble, this seems to have "landed" really well and many are keen to watch free to air domestic football with some of those "old clubs from back then".

Whichever way this goes, alot of old "fans" are coming out of the woodwork... what that looks like for both the Championship and Aleague, I guess we will find out this year. Could be good for both of us.

In theory, more football (regardless of what league) should have a wider net positive effect. The more football freely available the better for all. Simple market saturation. The more visible something is, the more popular it seems.

100% this.... all boats lift on a rising tide and all that. Its why the AFL is covering Saturday during the day with womens AFL and VFL matches even though they are loss leaders.

Interesting that the Championship will be shown free to air in the Pacific region too....

This partnership announcement follows the news that five matches from the Australian Championship (two Quarter Finals, two Semi Finals and the Final) will be broadcast live and free into the Pacific Islands via Football Australia’s partnership with Pacific Aus TV.

You only have to hope that David Basheer is not one of the commentators, he was chronic when the A league was on SBS.

Hahahahah yeah Bash is a bit of a dry character isn't he?? Personally I hope a few of the NPL volunteer commentators around Australia get a crack at this gig... They have the knowledge and experience of watching some of these clubs week in week out and in a more professional environment than a single camera and 2 man media team, may actually gorw their craft.... can only be a good thing.

I know you are a sceptic, and I don't blame you, but this Championship is a great evolutionary tool for Australian football in all facets of the game here.. Players, backroom staff, managers, media, groundskeepers, fans ... EVERYONE. Im an optimist sure, but if it takes off we can double the resources we have as a sport almost overnight..... thats the hope anyway.
