It wasn't about pokies.

It was about Queenslanders playing in the NSWRL being picked for NSW and then flogging Queensland every year in the NSW vs Qld game hence the introduction of state of ORIGIN.
North of the border it was about pokies

The pokies were the reason why nsw were able to poach qld players which built up so much resentment

of course, nsw dont get origin ;)

Some states can't even afford to run state teams, let along organise players for state of origin.

The pokies were the reason the best Qld players went to the NSWRL clubs, as their pokie income meant that they could pay players much more. But Muz is right, it was the fact that NSW were beating QLD (thrashing them in most cases) with many Queenslanders, which was the cause of the rivalry.

I think it is a good idea,

Outside the box thinking, It would also create interest in those states who don’t have pro teams.

Who is going to be paying the players for this if you are separating them from their clubs to play for a purely state based entity?

Wild idea, don’t really know if there is appetite for it. But I was thinking it would be cool if we had some kind of state of origin type tournament that runs every year played through international breaks.

Would give more football to watch during international breaks when there are no A-league matches. Would also give players who aren’t quite socceroo material exposure to representative football.

I’m thinking a 5-game series. 8 states (NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS, QLD, NT, WA, SA)

Stage 1 - 2x groups of 4 (3 matches per state)
Stage 2 - Semi Final (A1 v B2 / B1 v A2)
Stage 3 - Final

Would also give some more media airtime to our game.
Voctory already have the big white V, Sydney the sky blue, Adelaide red and Brisbane sometimes wear maroon... The Aleague IS State of Origin, just get rid of some of the excess clubs.

huge complications that I agree - I admire the OP's thought and suggestion but its taken our Governance some 10yrs to produce a Championship knock out cup - think we need to keep focussing on our current mosh pit before even considering this not bad idea.

Oh well in that case I look forward to this idea coming to fruition in about another 10 years.

This has nothing to do with other codes. Plenty of football nations have done this in the past.

I understand it probably isn’t a good idea, was just a wild thought and idea that came to mind. But don’t rush to judge about this being like other codes when all examples I used was from actual football nations.

State Metro Reps have always been the youth state based equivalent. Been involved in plenty of those myself in one way or another.

On a professional level is another story however. If literally all of the professional and state based leagues played at the same time then post their seasons would be the ideal window for it to occur.
