Soccer Ashes thread

I saw the Popa press conference I must say it was disappointing he didn’t acknowledge that we got outplayed by New Zealand for most of the game almost like he was content with how we played, it’s clear he’s so stubborn with he’s 343/541 and won’t deviate from it.
Watch it again then. You might pick up a subtle comment about the first half.

Popovic gave no illusions about the game. He said it was OK in a downbeat tone.

Arnold certain admitted things after bad performances but crazy delusional Arnold did come out at times where he said he was very happy with what we did and it was as disjointed as last night.

I do not remember a game that disjointed since Pim's China game

Bos looked good coming forward and one pass from Metcalfe early in the game released him down the left touchline and nearly caught the Kiwi defence out .After that we seemed to use Bos almost exclusively with passes from our centre backs and DMs going down the left side of the field. This may also have been due to the smart full press from the Kiwis. However Silvera was occupying a wide space on the right but no one switched the play to him and he has been criticised on here for being ineffective.Burgess,Degenek,Yazbek and Teague ignored or were unable to switch the point of attack and if Bos was blocked we did not have any other incisive attacking options.

The one time Silvera looked to be beating two defenders he was smashed by that brutal tackle by deVries.I think hius ankle was not up to it and thus Miller came on at half time. The other second half subs came on and the Kiwis weren't pressing as hard as Wood had been subbed and and they were tiring.Maybe Popovic was smart and released Toure and Irankunda at the right time to swing momentum our way.Milanovic also looked the part with some smart passes as the Kiwis losst their shape.

Yeah nearly every coach in australia tries to dominate possession so we have someone quite unusual in charge

The back five means if you pin our wing backs with wide attackers there is an achre of space for opposition fullbacks and the central midfielders are out numbered 2 to 3. Then when we have posession we dont start recycling and patientiently bulding through the thirds until around the 60 minute mark (as @Decentric points out when the opposition press starts to run out of steam)

In posession we either try quick positive forward passing sequences or long passes to break the press. But that means our possession phases are short

We also only press high when a trigger happens

All this means conceding possession and aussies who have been taught possession based philosophy for over a decade think we are being dominated

It is pretty odd tho having a national style implemented from the top down and having a national coach go againdy it :D

In a back 3/5 your pretty much relying on the wingbacks for width and playing through the middle as well.

Pressing is also different too.

Agree with the assessment of Silvera. He got into some good space and we didn't have the vision to switch to him.

It was pretty bad. Off the top of my head the NZ game is Brisbane was better in a passing sense but also sloppy.

That China one was terrible and was still an A international albeit dead rubber.

The concerning thing is that the AL is training youth to play in a forward passing sequence which don't fit Poppa's idea of how football should be played. This will mean that a lot players will not get called up and end up being frustrated. And with dual nationality being a big issue for the Socceroos this could mean a lot of losses.
BTW has Poppa ever made any comment on the FA football philosophy?

Was it Milanovic with that very long diagonal ball soon after he came on? The subs really did put their foot down. If only Popovic had Hrustic and Metcalfe deeper and more central and then had both wing backs overlap, Yazbek and Teague would've been less exposed.

Agree with the article, I think the Socceroos are close to having a new golden generation under Popa, who's also nine games unbeaten, but the current setup hasn't had the chance to prove itself in a major tournament yet. Ideally the benchmark would be retaining the Soccer Ashes by the end of the September international window and finishing respectably at the World Cup next year.

TBH I don't think we should judge that quickly. Realistically with the young guys just starting now and with the talent coming through behind them I would be looking as 2030 World Cup before passing an early judgement on this group. There are only a few in the team yesterday that have a lot of NT experience.

I think the future is looking brighter than at any time since the late 1990's and we probably need to be patient with the young guys until they get some more experience. We have a lot of talented young players starting to show their skills, but often young players make mistakes due to a lack of experience. When the talent we have picks up the necessary experience we have the potential to pick up another Asian Cup and have our best ever World Cup result while I'm still around to see it.

Agree with most of that, though even on replay i didnt notice any horrid defensive mistakes from irankunda but i did see 2 from yazbek/teague 1 from oniell and lot from hrustic. Having said that oniell made a big difference

Having metcalf on the same flank as bos probably gives him a lot of freedom, not much attack came down that side
Haven’t had a look at a replay yet - putting off onerous stat compilation via replay - which is very satisfying once completed, Grazor.

Even Circati was beaten all ends up against Japan B on just 1 occasion.

Didn’t notice Hrustic’s specific mistakes, but he usually makes a few. I know his game better than many of the newbies. I’ll no doubt see plenty on replay. Wish Silvera had been tried in his position.

Good post, Booney!
