Matilda's abroad

U23 Matilda Polly Doran played 75 minutes in Linköping's 2–1 victory over Alingsås in a crucial win in the Damallsvenskan relegation battle. Linköping have now won two games in a row.

Meanwhile Aivi Luik's Häcken beat Daniela Galić's Vittsjö 4–0 away from home in the small Scanian town of Vittsjö. Häcken are now second in the league and will later face Atlético Madrid in the UWCL qualifiers in a game I would put them as the favourites to win.

I wonder if Polly will get called up for a friendly anytime soon. Maybe not for a tournament but perhaps as a player to test out?

Sharn Freier an unused substitute for 10-player VfL Wolfsburg in their 4-2 DFB-Supercup Frauen loss to Bayern, but she played 64 minutes for Wolfsburg reserves in a 4-0 loss to SC Sand in 2. Frauen-Bundesliga on Sunday. Alana Murphy not in the matchday squad altogether for SC Sand.

What’s Sharn doing in the reserves?

Not sure why Sharn was demoted to the reserve side but it's probably to let her get game time ahead of their season opener, given that she was an unused substitute in the DFB-Supercup Frauen and is only just returning to full fitness from the ankle injury she sustained earlier in the year.

Chelsea women head coach Sonia Bompastor has confirmed Sam Kerr will be in the matchday squad for WSL opening day against Manchester City tomorrow. It's not known whether she'll start or be on the bench though.

Tonight the European league start up but it's Sweden and the Damallsvenskan that I'm most interested in this weekend:

* Malmo vs Hammarby: massive game that could make or break the title race for Hammarby as Courtney Nevin's Malmö look to stay first. Over 7,000 tickets have already been sold and it's being played at the 3Arena. For Sweden's population (about 10 million) that's a very good crowd, as was the 13,000 for the cup final that Hammarby won.

* Häcken vs Kristianstad: another big game in the title race (except this game is on Sunday) because Häcken could go back to top of the league if they win and Malmö lose

Potential outcomes:

* 1. Malmö, 2. Häcken, 3. Hammarby (status quo)
* 1. Malmö, 2. Hammarby, 3. Häcken
* 1. Hammarby, 2. Malmö, 3. Häcken
* 1. Hammarby, 2. Häcken, 3. Malmö
* 1. Häcken, 2. Hammarby, 3. Malmö
* 1. Häcken, 2. Malmö, 3. Hammarby

I will be closely following Hammarby vs Malmö tomorrow at 9:00pm AEST.

Hayley Raso on the bench for Eintracht Frankfurt in their Frauen-Bundesliga opening day game against SGS Essen.

Daniela Galic played 66 minutes for Vittsjo, getting an assist and a yellow card in the 50th minute of their 3-2 Damallsvenskan win over FC Rosengard.

Ellie Carpenter starts for Chelsea at right-back in their WSL opening day game against Manchester City, making her competitive club debut. Sam Kerr on the bench for Chelsea. Mary Fowler still out with injury and not in the matchday squad altogether for Man City.

Beat me to it! Apparently Raso just got subbed on in the Frankfurt game which is good timing because I’m just about to turn it on.
