The Orange Army. (Brisbane Roar Official Thread)

Looks like a good signing.

Seems a bit scary that we only have 12 players contracted so far. Not even a full team with bench yet.

Says something about how big a change the team has from last season.

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar are delighted to announce the signing of defender Ava Piazza for the upcoming 25/26 Ninja A-League season.

Piazza joins the club from Pyunik FC from the Armenian Premier League after previously playing for Portuguese side Clube de Albergaria in the Liga BPI.

The 20-year-old has also played for both Newcastle Jets and Canberra United during the 23/24 season, where she made six appearances.

The defender, who can play both defensive midfield and central defence, played her junior football for Sydney University Soccer Football Club. She then went on to join Western Sydney Wanderers’ Future Women's Program and played Under 17’s for Apia Leichhardt.

Piazza was selected into the Football NSW Institute before becoming a Melbourne Victory train-on player and having a breakout year that saw her become a part of the Future Matildas Training Program and part of several Young Matildas training camps. This success led to her signing her first A-League contract with Canberra United.

“I’m incredibly excited to be signing with Brisbane Roar,” Piazza said.

“I chose Roar because of the club’s culture, the professionalism, and the opportunity to grow as a player in a really competitive environment.

“This season, I’m looking forward to contributing as much as I can to the team’s success, pushing myself to new levels, and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.

“After a few months in Europe, I’m buzzing to be back in Australia and joining Brisbane Roar. Can’t wait to get started!”

Speaking on the addition of Piazza to the squad, Head Coach Alex Smith said: “Extremely pleased to welcome Ava to the program.

“She is an aggressive player always on the front foot who now has European experience to bring back to the A-League Women’s.

“Ava is someone who understands the commitment it takes to be a professional footballer.”

25/26 Ninja A-League Women’s Contracted Players: Chloe Lincoln, Laini Freier, Ruby Cuthbert, Leia Varley, Momo Hayashi, Isabela Hoyos, Alicia Woods, Zara Kruger, Amali Kinsella, Daisy Brown, Ava Piazza and Grace Kuilamu."
oh wow is that a new young aussie?

She is a signing for the women's team if that slipped your notice.

I don't know much about her play - I remember her name from the wleague with Canberra United.

What I have seen suggests she was a bit of an up and coming player as a teenager but for some reason only played 8 or so aleagues women's matches and not many for her Armenian side Pyunik FC. Been involved in some of the young Matildas training so has that as a benchmark.

first thing in the morning here I did indeed miss that

It is funny - with the men's team we see a 20 year old and consider them an emerging talent. With the women's setup a 20 year old can almost be considered a veteran of the league. Chloe Lincoln, our women's keeper, has represented us in the Matildas 3 times.

Not a lot of games, but when you consider how hard it has been to get a run with our baked on Tillies keepers that is something.

Is that because the women are producing better players or do women just peak earlier?

Chloe Lincoln has some big wraps. I'm surprised she signed with the Roar. She's been in and around the Matildas setup, but hasn't really broken through. What she needs is a consistent run of games with some good coaching behind her. I don't think there is too much competition in Aus Womens goalkeeper ranks, so she's definitely still capable of being a Matildas regular, but on world scale, in general, womens sport is improving and so she has a fair more to do in that regard.

My thoughts are that the womens game is still young so the pool is not as big and this allows players to be noticed earlier.
I give it a bit of this, but at the same time, younger players have been in the league more than in the men's - perhaps because the older women have moved on from sport historically.

There has also been less reliance on physical development in the women's game with teamwork and ball play being more used. As such it is quite common to see 15/16 year olds playing the women's game and a 20 year old can have 5 years under her belt.

A younger female can be faster and more athletic than an older one so youthful energy against experience has been more balanced (again traditionally).

I also wonder about women taking time off to become mothers. Men could in theory take a month off although I don't know whether they are entitled to paternity leave.

I am certain that we are in a period of transition with women's football.

With the global increase in women's football the ages and dynamics of players is changing. There are more financial reasons to stay in the sport now so we can expect that to have an effect on top of the media train carrying their popularity further than ever.

Men are possibly covered by 'Centrelink' paternity scheme payments - not enough to see them out of the game for long as far as I know. I also doubt that a new grandfather can claim anything though ;).

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar are proud to announce that James McGarry has been selected in the All-Whites Men’s National Team for the upcoming September international window.

McGarry will join the All-Whites for two international friendlies against the Subway Socceroos from September 5 in Canberra until September 9 in Auckland.

The 27-year-old defender who signed for the Roar in June from Scottish outfit, Aberdeen FC, has been settling into Brisbane and working hard ahead of the 25/26 season.

Speaking on his time since joining the Roar, McGarry said “It’s been a great start at the Roar so far. The environment at the club is first class and the pre-season fixtures we’ve been playing have allowed us to gel as a team ahead of the new season.

“Michael and the coaching staff have allowed me to continue playing my best football in Brisbane and as a result of this am honored to get the call-up to represent New Zealand next month.”

Head Coach, Michael Valkanis said: “The club and I are delighted for James.”

“James has been working hard this pre-season and is such a great addition to our squad. We are very proud of him to have the opportunity to represent his country next month.

“He is very deserving of this call-up, and the experience will be extremely beneficial ahead of the new season.” "

How can you want him to do well against the Socceroos dammit?

Hope he does well in a losing side. Good test for our Socceroos right side attack and defence from what I have seen of him. I am really liking him in orange.

Brief review of the Moreton Excelsior FC v Roar pre-season game from brisbaneroar.com.au:
"Brisbane Roar continued its pre-season fixtures with a 7-0 win over NPL outfit Moreton City Excelsior FC at South Pine Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

Justin Vidić opened the scoring after finding the back of the net from inside the box before Michael Ruhs charged towards goal and put one away from the angle to make it 2-0.

James McGarry put his name on the scoresheet after slotting the ball away at the near post just before half-time.

A brilliant cross from Milorad Stajić landed in the box for Justin Vidić to pounce on the deflection to score his second of the night and extend Roar’s lead 4-0.

Ivan Ozzi scored his first pre-season goal for Roar after a corner from Pearson Kasawaya found him in front of goal for an easy finish.

Trialist Justin Poon beat Moreton City defence and confidently found the back of the net to make it 6-0.

The night concluded after a successful penalty was taken by Ivan Ozzi to seal a 7-0 victory at Brendale.

The club would like to thank Moreton City Excelsior for hosting a great night as Roar continue to connect with the local football community this pre-season.

Up next, Roar head to the Sunshine Coast to face the Central Coast Mariners this Sunday 24 August"

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar are saddened to announce that Laini Freier has decided to move on from football following the conclusion of her NPL QLD season with Brisbane City FC and pursue a career outside of the game.

The club is looking forward to giving Laini a proper goodbye in front of the Brisbane fans at an upcoming Ninja A-League Women’s home game this season.

Freier signed for Roar ahead of the 23/24 season after starring for Brisbane City and winning the NPL QLD Grand Final alongside her sister, Sharn in that competition.

The 24-year-old made her debut away in Wellington before the Freier twins ran out together at Perry Park in Round 6 against the Central Coast Mariners.

After an impressive start to her A-League career, scoring seven goals in nine games and becoming the first player in the competition to score back-to-back hat tricks, Freier earned her first call-up to the CommBank Matildas in February ahead of the SheBelieves Cup in the United States. It was here that she received her first cap for the national team.

The midfielder feels as though now is time for her to move on from this chapter and turn her focus to family and her work career.

“I have been playing football since the age of 5 and feel like it’s time to move on with my life. I have just recently gotten married, built my house with my husband and want to focus more on my work career,” Freier said.

“I just want to be Sharn’s number one supporter wherever she goes, build my family life and spend my time with the ones I love. Football will always have the best memories for me but I’m ready to move on.

“Last year was by far the best year when it has come to my football. I signed my first professional contract with Brisbane Roar, had Sharn by my side and scored a back-to-back hat trick which I will never forget. It was an awesome moment and then I had a dream come true to represent my country as well.

“Thank you to all the fans, I am so grateful that I was able to make my professional debut in front of the Brisbane fans, the best fans in the league. I wish the girls nothing but the best for the future and will be cheering them on every step of the way.”

Speaking on Freier’s departure, Head Coach Alex Smith said: “When I first joined the club, Laini was a player I immediately wanted to bring in as I knew how talented she is.”

“I am happy she got to excel in the A-League Women's last year. Laini has a conviction on and off the pitch that I respect, and this decision is no different.

“It’s a rare thing at a young age to know what you want and go for it, so I of course wish her all the best and she will always be part of the Roar family.”

Brisbane Roar would like to say thank you to Laini for her contribution to the club and wish her all the best in the future."

A big loss for us.

As a notable note it shows something of the different world of women's football at this level and this stage of its evolution.

Laini wants to focus on her work career and family.

I may be wrong but I would expect most male aleagues players would consider football their work career while they are in the appropriate age range.

Very brief writeup of the Mariners pre-season game off the Roar website:
(Author Unknown)

"Brisbane Roar continued their pre-season fixtures with a 2-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners in front of 6,815 supporters at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

It was a physical battle between the two sides that saw most of the first half remain scoreless before Nathan Amanatidis crossed it into the box and found Justin Vidić in front of goal to make it 1-0 before the break.

James McGarry was next to find the back of the net, scoring against his former club by launching a shot past the keeper in the 83rd minute to secure the 2-0 victory.

After a great day out on the Sunshine Coast, the club would like to extend its thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council for making the day possible and to the fans that came out to support the club.

Up next, Roar head up to Redcliffe to face Peninsula Power in a pre-season clash on Tuesday 26 August at AJ Kelly Park"
