Cam Devlin starts for Hearts in their Scottish Premiership opening fixture against Aberdeen. Nieuwenhof not in the matchday squad altogether. Milanovic starts for Aberdeen, as does Kusini Yengi. Nicholas Suman on the bench.
My God I totally forgot Milanovic. AA ja STACKED. 18 in the Championship now.

Tweets so far saying Milanovic looks a player. Milanovic cross to Yengi hits post.

Some lamenting Yengi's slow reaction to loose balls. In a way but he's also selective and can get transitions started.

Quite a bit of Yengi moaning. Let me guess, he's isolated up top and there's so support and he's got 7 opponents on all sides. We've all seen Yengi at his best. He can still do it.

Devlin highest rated in first half. Milanovic 7.3 and Yengi 5.7. Shankland a 5.5 until he scored. 2:0 taken back.

Yengi had a bad first touch to start

Good movement from yengi so far and a bit of a beast, hit the post

Milanovic hit the post but caught the eye dribbling from deep, not that you want to break out of a press by dribbling through half the team. Aberdeens midfield dominated pretty badly

Devlin tenacious and making it very hard for aberdeen to hold the ball

All aussies off now

Devlin and hearts midfield choked aberdeen and the ball rarely got forward
Yengi with the only 2 clear cut chances but didnt get on target. His movement was good so if he gets enough games to blow the cobwebs out reckon this is a level he will do well at

Cam Devlin played the full match in addition to stoppage time and got yellow carded in the 61st minute for Hearts in their 2-0 win over Aberdeen. Milanovic played 81 minutes for Aberdeen before being subbed off, getting a yellow card in the 78th minute. Kusini Yengi played 62 minutes before being subbed off. No game time altogether for Nicholas Suman.

Would be cool for Suman to get a run of 10 games if the keeper got injured. Don't wish injury on anyone but that would need to happen for him to get a game.

Yengi getting cooked on Instagram by the Aberdeen fans. Milanovic one of the best for Aberdeen according to their fans

Still feel he can do something for Australia in the appropriate match. Like when Ferguson had Park Ji Sung just stalk Pirlo all game and nullified him.
Devlin would fit perfectly in Popovic's formation. He needs that terrier in the midfield breaking up play, tackling anything that moves & winning possession. He's not the most technically gifted player, but I like what he brings to the table

Respectfully disagree, Huddo.

At the same you've made a lot of good points re football in general lately.

I've assiduously compiled stats slowly for the Socceroos in all the last games. O'N is a really good ball winner. He wins a lot of 1v1s - tackling, steals, heading duels, shoulder barges and body on body contact contests.

Also, O'N is tidy on the ball with his left right and right left, receiving in with one foot and passing with the other, with pretty quick handling speed. Plus he is very two side of the body proficient. It is hard for opponents to force him onto a weaker side of the body or weaker foot.

Let's got through his career after Burnley.

Oldham 16/17 - L1 15 games - finished 17th - based off goal difference team parked the bus.

Fleetwood town 17/18 - L1 21 games - finished 14th- negative goal difference, extremely poor number of goals conceded.

CCM 18/19 - 24 games - record GD, last place.

Brisbane Roar 19/20 - 17 games - 4 place! GD was shocking again.

Now for his golden period Melb City 20-2023 - where he was DM for the 3 titles- just have a look at the players around him; Curtis Good, Riley Mcgree, Scott Jamison, Florin Berenguer. Royston Griffith, Scott Galloway and that's just defence and mid. It's arguable one of the strongest complete teams I've seen in the Aleague.

SL Belgium league - 23-25 - 50 games - 12th out of 16 first season, second season they came in 7th, a vast improvement until you look at the GD which puts them around 12th.

The bloke has had a very mediocre career. Where if his teams have kept goals out, they haven't been able to score (MC being the exception). That's not even going in to his poor record in the national team.

Does Karacic come into the frame now that he's starting for one of the biggest clubs in Croatia?
That is a pretty big feather in an Aussie cap starting at Hajduk Split. I think they are in a big UEFA club category, similar to UEFA Big Five teams.

For the Socceroos I've thought Karacic isn't quite good enough, but he may have improved if playing for HS?

Disagree about O'N's resurgence since 2020 with Melb City and Standard Liege. He has done well at club level, and for the Socceroos has also done well for the reasons I've mentioned.

Take your point though at Melb City. O'N was surrounded by good players by AL standards.

Irvine, O'Neill, Yazbek and Teague have also won plenty of hard balls in midfield for the Socceroos as DMs/midfield screeners.

What resurgence? SL came 12 and 11th in the 23/24 and 24/25 seasons respectively.

In the socceroos his stupidity cost us in the Asian cup semi. Granted his position in a low-block may assist Popa, but he doesn't transition, so his won ball is wasted, as we have seen in recent months.

Nothing stays the same in football.

Even early last year, Niuew looked like the most promising of his cohort in the DM position. It seems like his career has stagnated.

Ditto Lachlan Brook since going to the the USA. He had shooting power in both feet outside the box. He was a smart, talented winger with an eye for goal, defended well off the ball, who seems to have disappeared overseas.

I haven't seen English League 1 a lot, but had a good look at Wrexham playing 3 pre-season games against the 3 AL teams ( also in pre-season mode).

Peter, the Bulgarian guest on G and G podcast, who is a former pro and is a current scout ( I think?), also very knowledgeable about Aussie football, puts the Scottish league ( outside Rangers and Celtic) on a par with English League 1 and the AL.

It seems as though the latter two leagues are more technical ( from what I've seen, with Peter sharing the same opinion), albeit the AL playing at a slower tempo, and having less intensive Squeezing and Pressing when in BPO. It may be a product of the summer season.

I think Grazor says it is harder for Aussies to play in League 1. Given the technical football Wrexham play, and much higher passing stats per game in L 1 than Scotland, and excellent tactical game plans of Wrexham, albeit now being Championship, that L1 may be a much better destination for Aussies than Scotland, unless they play for the 2 big Glasgow clubs.
