I vented on the transfers thread so I won't repeat here. But seriously, if anyone is excited by this signing, they need therapy.

A greater urban population of north of 4 million, one club, and this is what we get from Patafta and the Bakries?? Oh, and Valkanis. Great start, Mike. You somehow conclude that in the whole of Australia, there is no available player more deserving of a squad place than this guy.

Our team has plenty of youth and Aussie talent throughout. I have no problem with buying in someone to fill a specific need or role like this.

South Melbourne haven't yet found us our next local striker.

"Brisbane Roar are delighted to announce that young Queenslander Amali Kinsella has signed a two-year scholarship contract ahead of the 25/26 Ninja A-League season from the Football Queensland QAS program.

Kinsella, who was a short-term injury replacement at the backend of the 24/25 season, made her A-League debut against Sydney FC in Round 17 at Leichhardt Oval.

The Sunshine Coast local grew up playing at Caboolture FC in an all-boys’ side, coached by her father before moving to Football Queensland’s elite women’s youth program where Kinsella continued to excel.

In 2024, Kinsella received the Sue Monteath Award (Player of the Year) as well as the Under 18 Players’ Player Award, following a standout season that saw her establish herself as a regular Brisbane Roar women’s train-on player.

The defender starred for Brisbane Roar in a pre-season match against the Queensland Women’s State Team, securing a second-half brace.

Speaking on committing her future to the club, Kinsella said: “It’s a very big privilege for me to be a part of this team.

“I’ve been coming to these games for so long and I’ve always wanted to play for Brisbane Roar.

“Getting to make my debut last year was very special. I feel like I had been working very hard up to that moment.

“I want to get as much game time as I can to take my football to the next level, so I feel like this is the perfect place for me to be.”

Head Coach Alex Smith said: “Amali has been patient and worked extremely hard to get here.

“She brings an aggressive attacking mindset to her position, which fits in perfectly with the way we want to play.

“She thoroughly deserved her debut last year, and I have no doubt she will build on that this season.

“Another young Queenslander we are expecting big things from, not only in our program but the national teams as well.”

This is bottom of the barrel stuff. We MUST be aiming higher than an unsuccessful 30 year old striker from the English 4th division.
 
Roar for the spoon this season, striker signing has really set them up for another long year at the foot of the table.

Well i do like our fullbacks and if we can keep herrington for the year we have a good back four at least

I like our fullbacks (counting Burke-Gilroy and McGarry as those), Herrington, Ludwig, Stajic so far (assuming it was him I watched), O'Shea, Klein, Halloran if used for speed in behind on fast positive play, Hore, Brazete, Ruhs, and Bouzanis.

I am still in the balance with Bility but I did not see him make mistakes against Caboolture and that is something. Warland is untested to me at this stage but I am open to him playing well.

Other names and faces, like MacNicol and Amanatidis, have promise or are just an unknown to me - but madness for me to think they are all crap as my starting point.

Ruhs, Brazete and Hore along with Chris Long and we have players to rotate up front and find what works best.

Grazor - we have youth in our team to watch and enjoy and we may have a decent balance for once of youth and experience to give those youngens a stable and effective platform to work out of. The little I have seen of Valkanis so far has us playing better football and targeting our weak left fullback, DM and striker roles with players he has selected.

So much more promise than what we have taken into pre-season in recent years.

I laugh at any prediction of us taking the spoon this coming year based on the signings that people have seen, a rusted on dislike or expectation, and nothing else. Haven't even watched a game against equal opposition and ignoring us actually converting our possession and dominance against a lower level team for once.

I am looking forward to our next pre-season game to see how we are progressing but be damned if I will start this season expecting poor play when the small glimpse I have had so far is good.

Roar for top 6 at least this season and bugger the doomsayers and naysayers.

"Brisbane Roar continue their 25/26 pre-season fixtures with a clash against NPL outfit St. George Willawong FC next Tuesday night at St. George’s Park.

After great community events in Caboolture and Holland Park in recent weeks, the club is looking forward to engaging with the local football community further on Tuesday. Here’s everything you need to know:

Football Queensland will be running their junior clinics at 5:15pm pre-match in conjunction with St. George Willawong, that will see Brisbane Roar players involved in co-coaching small-sided games and skills drills.

The Football Queensland inflatable field will be set up next to the clubhouse from 6:15pm.

St. George Willawong will be providing the half-time entertainment, with their Miniroos set to take the field for some small-sided games during the break.

Brisbane Roar will have their tent set up for membership information and merchandise.

Fans are encouraged to stay around after the match for photo opportunities and a signing session with their favourite players.

The club canteen will be operating to provide food and drinks throughout the night.

Love your passion. I do think we need a good 6 to come from somewhere before im feeling confident. Any youth prospects have the starch and technique to do the role?
 
Our fullback positions seem to be our lightest covered and the most likely to use extra youth in unless we sign some more fullbacks specifically.

We know that O'Shea can strengthen the DM but having him as a mentor for a young DM would be a waste of a position on the field that we need to bring the ball forward through the centre. I liked seeing Stajic (or whoever) at DM and O'Shea free to link with Klein in a box to box role.

Milorad Stajic is the DM we have signed and I am keen to see more of him to judge for myself if he is what we needed.

The problem with a youthful DM is that is exposes us so badly while the player learns and develops. It is as bad as CB for a young player learning the ropes if they don't have an experienced group around them for guidance and cover when they do make the necessary learning mistakes.

To me Herrington runs against the norm in that he has stepped into a weak backline and performed from the get go. Fantastic for us that he could do that when I compare it to other up and comers like Daniel Bowles who showed promise but were hideously exposed and I think somewhat broken by the lack of support around them on field. Having Bowles and Pepper as our CB pairing was a bad period of time to be trying to establish yourself.

I have not paid much attention to our Youth squad but that know-it-all bastard AI suggests:
"The Brisbane Roar's NPL (National Premier Leagues) Queensland squad for 2025 includes several midfielders who could play a defensive midfield role. Key midfielders include Jack Benham, Caleb Butler, Eddie Ince, Noah Maieroni, James Durrington, Tate Baldwin, and Sam Klein. While the squad list doesn't explicitly label players as "defensive midfielders," any of these players could be utilized in a holding or defensive midfield position depending on the tactical setup. "

We know Klein and Durrington are in the men's squad already.

Anyone got an eye on the youth setup that can help us out here?

bovalina seems a bit of a gun to me and at an age he should be improving quickly

mcgarry's on the other side

have they been decent in trials?

The tricky part is in Australian football our elite 6's are better as central mids because they don't play enough opposition that force them to learn how to do the defensive and physical stuff

Roar have some great kids coming through as seen last season so i would like to see them again pushing for more game time. You guys really need a decent midfielder and striker as you pretty much have the defenders and wings covered. If u can get that good quality player in the middle to feed the kids up front your def in for a top 6 finish.

I haven't seen anything of Bovalina for us but McGarry was very impressive against Caboolture. They defended him tight and he was both solid and flashy when he needed to be.

Our L Plate DMs learn some very hard lessons in the aleague - they are thrown against the players that most clubs choose to spend their money on in core attacking roles.
